my mum has had Atrial Fib. for 2 years and tonight she had a stroke infront of me. she also has kidney failure dating back 12 months (unrelated). anyone had stroke due to AF? what is the treatment/recovery? we hoping it's just a TIA (mini stroke). need some info/reassurance x

Sorry to hear that Lizzie. Is your mum on anticoagulants? Atrial fibrillation increases the stroke risk by a factor of 5. Anticoagulants reduce the risk but don’t eliminate it entirely. I hope everything is okay.

thanks. she was but they took her off them 6 months ago because of a bad bleed as a result of them and so they never got her back on them. she s stable and in the right place

It’s a fine balance between risk of bleed and risk of clot. Glad she’s stable.

The Stroke Association recommends a reduced fat diet. AF causes strokes without regard to diet.

Hi lizzie1986 , sorry to hear about your mum. We have some further information on stroke and where you can find support: bhf.org.uk/informationsuppo...

Really hope this helps.

I would just ignore Concerned, lizzie. He has a bee in his bonnet and every single one of his numerous posts pushes his rather maverick diet, whatever the problem. I suggest the Bhf's advice is rather more reliable! I hope your mother is getting on better.

she is making a slow recovery. we are all heartbroken by what we see in her at the moment. as a dialysis patient she already has a very strict diet. I think suggesting the above was a bit insensitive of him to be honest but hey ho. what we are not sure now is how the long term recovery looks. it's a waiting game I guess
