Following test showing trace of blood in urine, it’s been sent off for testing and he’s been told to repeat the test in two weeks and to drink water prior to the sample.

In case the cause is irritation lemon barley water is a good natural remedy.

It's worth noting that alcohol and caffeine are irritants. There is also a suggestion that the artificial sweeteners used in diet drinks are as well.
