Medication (short term and long term)
Usually a minimum of lanzoprazol to line your stomach in a morning then bisoprolol which is a beta blocker and aspirin but then some people need a lot more but that would be the minimum as that’s what I’m on
Pete
I had an AVR in August and my blood pressure medication was stopped. I take a daily 75mg aspirin and Omeprazole which I've been on for years for an hiatus hernia. During cardiac rehab my blood pressure was monitored and although not too high it was above what they like so have just been started on ramapril. My surgeon said they might introduce bisoprolol at some point but see how I get on.
I had a AVR (tissue) in May. I am taking part in the TAVI trials, however I was selected for open heart surgery as my angiogram showed that I needed a double bypass as well. I now take bisoprolol (1.25), ramipril (1.25), aspirin (75), frusemide (20mg) and have since gone back on my atrovastatin.
Initially I had problems with the bisoprolol/ramipril combination - a lot of hair loss. I discussed this with my GP, but she was reluctant to take me off because of their protective role. I’m pleased to say things have settled down and despite a little dizziness at times everything seems fine and my recovery is going well despite the fact that I am 77 years young! I don’t take anything for my stomach apart from occasional glaviscon.
Best wishes for your recovery.
Thanks for all your comments. I suppose I was a bit naive in thinking that I wouldn’t be on any medication after recovery from AVR.
Everyone is different. When I had my AVR (tissue) last November I was prescribed with a daily disolvable aspirin and omeprazol (to protect stomach lining). When I met with my consultant about 12 weeks later he said I could drop the omeprazol, and just continue with the aspirin. Subsequently, my blood pressure had a blip and I was put on Amlopodine to bring it down. I've taken that now for 6 months, and my doctor said we could review it after that time, so I'm hopeful I can come off that too. So it's not inevitable that you'll be on lots of meds. Good luck.
