Earlier this week there was a post where the issue related to the addition of turmeric as a supplement when taking anticoagulants. Interestingly around the weekend I got send a link from my old university (was one of the top polytechnics at the time) about a recent piece of research about taking supplements with your medication. Supplements highlighted included Evening Primrose Oil, St John’s Wort, Ginkgo, glucosamine and Omega3 fish oil. The link is:-

When I had my bypass pre-op I was told to stop all non-prescribed medication two weeks before my operation. I did query this as the only additional thing I take is Vitamin C to try and prevent irritation of the arteries which can lead to plaque build-up. Whilst they could understand my point of view they said they imposed a blanket ban as there were so many items available in chemists, health food shops and on-line.

In fact, if you are on prescribed medication you should always run anything you want to add past your pharmacist or GP to prevent adverse interactions!
