Depends on whether or not you are seeing the Cardiologist before or after your holiday; if prior you will be in a position to provide an insurance company with full facts. My experience: following a 24-hr ECG and then an Echogram, I was diagnosed with AF in March last year late on a Friday morning before we were due to fly to Cyprus for our Golden Wedding celebration on the Sunday. Appointment with the Cardiologist was in the May. We were insured with Avanti and when I telephoned them on the Friday afternoon, the sales girl had to telephone the under-writer for a decision. This came back to me at 5.45pm. Choices were, cancel the holiday or go with Avanti Insurance covering me for everything apart from anything connected to my heart, unless my doctor, or the Cardiologist, would state I was fit to travel. Naturally, neither would - the doctor due to the fact he had referred me to the Cardiologist who had ordered the tests, and the Cardiologist because my appointment wasn't until May. I made the decision to travel, thinking a) Cypriots must have heart attacks, so their hospitals should be OK, and b) that as we are in the EU, part of the cost would be covered and I could claim balance from Newcastle. Only problem would have been repatriation. Of course, this is a very personal decision and I am not suggesting anyone-else makes this choice. Our's was an annual Avanti policy so when I had seen the Cardiologist, I re-contacted them and they insured my heart problem, for an extra premium. Since then, I have asked one of our doctors if he would state I was fit to travel. His response? No way, as he could tell anyone with heart problems they were fit and the may then walk out of the surgery and have a heart attack in the corridor! So, Avanti may well cover you if you are travelling after your appointment. This year we have insured for a single trip with SAGA.
