Wimbledon - Men's Finals

No I am not going totally off topic. Over the last couple of days we have seen the longest and second longest men's semi-finals. They have given their all and I think the final should be moved to Monday to give them a chance to recover.

One thing that concerns me is that over the years we have seen (fortunately few) cardiac events amongst sportspeople. Pushing the limits seems wrong here.

What do you think?

Atrial Fibrillation is common in endurance athletes, but my sister has it too, the hardest event I did was cycling 760 miles in 90 hours!

Whoa! I feel tired reading that!

I would agree. Especially given the heat and dehydration factors which contributes to poor heart health. Zena

They employ nutritionist and physics and medics etc. They gave lots of breaks and they have access to limitless water/hydration. And it might be hot to you but believe me, it’s a damn site hotter in Melbourne. I think there probably should be tie breaks in the 5th (if only to stop us, the viewer, being subjected to a near never ending and mind numbing run of aces), but as for an extra day off, they sign up for this and get a fortune for doing it, so no, let them get on with it.

Hi Michael, I would hope that given their elite status they would pay attention to checks on their health including their hearts. I know what you mean though, my father passed away after a 3 mile run and was very fit. That was about 30 years ago though. As Tim Henman said before the final the players have played in hotter temps than centre court.

A friend had a triple bypass. For a long while he had issues with the scar tissue limiting leg movement. However, with time he got back into cycling and does quite long rides at decent average speeds. He is hesitant about trying time trials again but then he has hit six-0!

So it’s possible to get active. I used to enjoy sports as a kid but been too scared as an adult. My cardiologist says I should be more active.

Interesting point

There are quite a number of young fit healthy individuals particularly sports players who sadly are undiagnosed and pass away during exercise. A young family friend recently addressed the Scottish Parliament re this issue with the idea that all young people should have access to heart checks at an early teenage age. There are charities out there who will help with this but I think if testing had been in place I would not have suffered 50 years of an undiagnosed heart issue. It's only by chance that I survived my out of the blue STEMI which lead to a diagnosis
