A heart rate monitor is just that - it gives you a numeric read out of the number of beats per minute (bpm). It can show your body's response to exercise or increased activity so enables you to limit exertion or take control of your training or rehab routine. Heart rate is read from a chest strap which communicates with a wrist mounted monitor or directly from the wrist by the monitor. The level of sophistication increases generally with price so if you wish to record and analyse data or combine this with GPS mapping capability, then it's all out there. However, simple readout watch starts at around £15 - £20 in places like Aldi/Lidl from time to time together with Lloyds Pharmacy. Then there's the Internet. Just decide what features you need and or your budget. Hope this helps.

Hi Alex as Ian has said there are such a wide variety of options out there. I wear mine all the time. However a word of caution in the early days post heart attack I became obsessed by my heart rate!! To the point where my partner and cardiac rehab team were threatening to throw it out of the window!! Most unkind but much needed!! So now I am measured with it and focus more on how many steps I have done rather than the heart rate itself. So when you say it’s for peace of mind be aware that it may not do that!! Take care. Zena

I was diagnosed with bradycardia and became obsessed with taking my heart rate when it was low I would feel ill if even if I was not. It was far from reassuring. Even when I got my pacemaker I could not trust it as was checking rate all the time. I am pleased to say I have stopped now and do not worry all the time so think carefully first

Thank you for the advice from all of you

The peace of mind is more setting a high and low range as well as monitoring steps blood pressure etc
