How come after my CABG (13weeks post op) every 2 or 3 days I can easily stay up, sleepless all night?

After my surgery I used to be very concerned about my insomnia... praying, keeping my wife up talking, etc.. now when it happens I just accept it and go into my living room and watch a movie and know that I’ll be up all night and the next day into the night. I’ll probably sleep tomorrow night... when does this end? I’m beginning to become jealous of my baby and wife who can fall asleep anywhere in 3mins whenever they are tired.

I slept loads after my CABGs, so much so that I missed the good summer of 1997. (Was that the last good summer we had?) You could try things like changing to decaf tea and coffee, a drop of Lavender oil on your pillow, reading before attempting to sleep, listening to soothing music/sounds while going to sleep. A glass or two of red wine?

Probably worth seeing your doctor.

Hi Mr Music

I had AVR 8 months ago, and when I returned home found sleeping very hard, I’ve never experienced sleepless nights and hated feeling tired and agitated, it was also affecting my recovery. After a couple of weeks I couldn’t take anymore and my GP gave me sleeping tablets . 1st week I took 2 about 9pm and boy I had the best sleep ever, woke up feeling so refreshed the second week I took just 1 and by the third week my sleeping pattern had returned and I stoped. I’ve never had a problem sleeping since.so don’t suffer any more go too your GP you will be amazed how much better you will feel and sleep is essential for recovery. So here’s to plenty of sleep 💤 Kaz ❤️💖💕

I had some prescription pills.. yes they worked but I took them sparingly only cause I was in pain.... after the pain subsided I’m trying not to use them for fear of becoming a junkie... I don’t want to be the guy that can only sleep with drugs... were you concerned with this??

May be at first, I’ve never taken anything like it before, but I got too a point where I didn’t care as long as I got sleep 😴 they worked so good in the 1st week taking two, I felt completely different that by week 2,I only needed the one and at the end of that week just went without I’ve been sleeping well ever since . I looked at it that I was in control not the tablets , they were just to help me out for a few weeks, job done. Just get the sleep and don’t worry about what could happen , you will feel so different and recovery quicker.remember you are in control not the tablets.

I went down the medication route. GPs don’t really like prescribing sleepers but you will probably find them quite receptive. I only took them for a couple of nights just to get over the hump and I’d say I was now back to my normal sleep pattern.

After my Aortic valve replacement I had irregular heart beat and insomnia. I just spent the time awake doing hobbies I enjoyed, even digging the garden and when dead tired, went to bed and slept. Lasted for about 6 weeks before heart and sleep rhythm back to normal.
