CABG and caffeine

Hi. I'm new here. I'm 60, male and as I write I am 9 days post op, having had a triple bypass on 19th October - the day after my 60th birthday.

I'm still very much on the 'breathless' stage of my recovery, but for the first time since the op I am feeling the urge to turn my espresso maker on and have a nice shot of caffeine. Does anyone know if its OK to do this?

Hey Steve welcome to the forum

Help yourself to coffee, don't overdo it though, I stick to a cup a day now sometimes two.

Glad you made it here any questions just ask, I'm a week short of a year on from my quad bypass

Many thanks Mark. Looks like I will have to cut back on my pre-op consumption levels, but I will savour all the more the ones I do have.

Hello Steve

I am another one who has had CABG now just over 2 years post op, if I remember correctly I had a coffee whilst in the HDU it was only an instant, not one from a machine. So I would think it would be OK only time I have been told no caffeine was before a Myocardial Profusion Scan. I now only drink half a cup when I have coffee so as not to overload the water works as I take Furrosemide to help control fluid levels.

Wishing you a good recovery

Thanks Frank. I too recall being offered coffee post op but as with you it was always that awful instant stuff and I had no way of knowing whether it was decaff or not. The general advice seems to be 'OK in moderation'. That being the case I will just have the one or two espressos and take the time to enjoy each in turn.

Like you I also take a diuretic (Co-Amilofruse in my case). I already feel like I could 'pee for England' so I'm hoping keeping the volume low but the 'hit' high will not add to the all too frequent trips to the bathroom.

Many thanks again

I too had triple April this year, I think the issue is around the amount of caffeine you drink can affect your heart rate, but I would just drink it in moderation. Take Care

Thanks 'Twobells'. Prior to being admitted to hospital on 12th October, I was a habitual 'double-espresso' drinker 4 was normal, 6 not unusual. However, since the 12th, I have had precisely one 'single' espresso (today as it happens). So hopefully, the habit is broken and I will be sensible and enjoy the one or two single shots all the more.

I hope your recovery is progressing well

Regards

Hi Steve

Caffeine is definitely not good for your heart especially so soon after a major procedure like yours. It may start to give you palpitations. So do yourself a favour and resist your urge .
