hello all

I am now 2 weeks post op and 1 week post discharge after my double CABG and everything is ticking along nicely except I’ve hit a couple of bumps in the road and wanted to seek peoples advice and experience.

So on discharge I was given a weeks supply of water retention tablets despite returning to post op weight before discharge, I had added 12 kg of water during my week in hospital, and the tablets finished on Monday but I’m still suffering the after effects of getting up 2-3 times per night for the toilet and it’s playing havoc with my sleep with 4.5 hours being a pretty good night. Has anyone similar experience?

secondly my GP advised following blood tests I have an inflamed marker and am on antibiotics now and that’s ok and expected but my platelet level has rocketed to 667 and I think that’s not a good thing due to blood getting stickier and higher risk of stroke etc. I’m having another review today but again wondered if others had experienced similar?

Thank you

Hello :-)

I am really pleased that other than a few little bumps here and there your recovery seems to be going well

The water meds could still be in your system as you only stopped them Monday I was on a strong one and it took about a week for things to settle down as I had to come of it I was getting the same or similar effects you have been having

How has your review gone have you had it today hopefully they have answered your questions and put your mind at ease :-)

Let us know how you get on :-) x

Thanks for the advice. My GP reported similar so it’s just a case of waiting a little longer for normal service to resume…

Regarding my high platelet count I spoke with my GP and consultant twice each today and between them they think starting me on ticagrelor is the best clinical option for protection of my CABG so I’m getting those tomorrow. My rehab is booked for 6 weeks and consultant review for 8 weeks. Otherwise slowly onwards and upwards.

Hello :-)

I agree normal service as you put it will resume shortly :-)

I had 3 heart attacks and was put on ticagrelor then I had to have a triple Bypass and took ticagrelor for a year before I could come of it after my op I thought you may have been already on it but it is along with others very good in keeping the blood thin the only thing I will say is you might find you bruise more easily if you do there is nothing to worry about that is normal

Hi Mancunian,

Before I went into hospital I weighed 83kg on my discharge I weighed 87kg. Like you I was going to the toilet 4 or 5 times a night and by 2 months my weight had dropped to 78kg. Every day it would drop around 0.3kg. This is due to one water and the other that I reckon your body burns an additional 2000 calories on the healing process.

Around 8 weeks I was sleeping through the night with only 1 bathroom break.

The weight loss stopped at around 2 months.

I dropped over 3kg of muscle during recovery but thankfully I have put 4.5kg of muscle back on.

I have shown a picture of my leg which oozed black blood around 3 weeks.

I wasn't on water tablets.

I had blood clot tests but all came back negative and my surgeon did say my leg was one of the worst he has seen but thankfully just bruised slightly after 13 months.
