Hi Tracey. I have heart failure and do receive PIP. Not sure I have much useful advice. By the sounds of other people's experiences, I think I got lucky with the person who assessed my claim. Probably the most important thing (something my assessor helped me with) is to make sure you frame your symptoms within the criteria they set out. Take your time to work out what aspects of your condition fit with the questions on the form and answer them in a concise way, sticking to precisely what the form asks. As far as I know, it's awarded on a points system, so the more boxes you tick, the better. And then you just have to take your chances with the interview. Not how it should work, but definitely how it does work. I feel so lucky to have mine. It's enabled me to work less hours and still be able to afford to run my car and pay for gym membership etc. These things make a huge difference to how I can manage my condition. Not that the assessors are interested in how you'd use the money or what difference it would make, so don't bother trying to tell them!
For you, this is likely to be Contribution-based ESA in which case the complication about whether or not you're in a Universal Credit area isn't relevant at this stage.
Good luck with the claims. Suggest you run forms past your local Citizens Advice (if you have one) before you submit them.
Best wishes for a good recovery
Alan
