Topamax withdrawal night sweats

I am withdrawing from Topamax, 100mg, have been on it for a few years. I have been off it completely for two and a half weeks. The last 10 days or so I have woken up every night all sweaty! I don’t know if this is associated with my withdrawal or something else. Does anyone know if night sweats are a common withdrawal symptom?

Hi Tigerlily2

Having a read about the drug I can see the answer is yes to sweating, it is like many drug withdrawals the detoxification mechanism by your body to help itself readjust to functioning without the drug:

epilepsy.com/connect/forums...

I recall a Dr telling me years ago about the withdrawal of certain drugs taking months to literally get out of your system as the drug is in every single cell of your body, I took amitriptyline for 9 years for nerve pain and when I came off it I did this so so slowly and yet 2 months later I was still feeling the effects I would say honestly it months before I felt free of everything.

Hope you start to feel better soon. You might want to look at doing a detox diet for a few days to see if this might help.

Gillian 🙂

Thanks, Gillian! At least I have some idea where this sweating is coming from!

Hopefully it won't take several months for it to stop... :)

Hi

its possible. But its also possible that the topamax was stopping night sweats, I take the same drug and it helps with mine which were very bad. It also keeps my spasms/cramps down along with the terrible headaches. Like you I found that 100mg is enough to take the edge off but I do increase the dose when needed.

What I have to ask, well hubby has asked (pain med specialist) is why you have come off this at 100mg? Normal routine would be to reduce at 25mg as slow as possible. Preferably over months not weeks and certainly not cold turkey without some kind of back up because they are powerful drugs and in the case of topamax it is am anti addiction drug too that will have been providing support for all sorts of things you may not even be aware of inc anxiety alleviation as a seratonin support.

Good luck.

Oh yes, I should have clarified in my original post... I did come off the 100mg gradually and over a period of about 3 months. I went down 25mg, waited a few weeks up to a month if I was tolerating it, then went down another 25mg, etc.

I got off it because I want to get pregnant and start a family. Otherwise, despite all the horrible side effects people describe, I think I would have stayed on it! Probably best for my body to not rely on it though... :/

It will pass :) Luckily you are only coming off a low dose and you know what to expect and what you are doing :). Good luck with the baby, a challenge and a life of hopeful love :) and angst lol

Agree with the staying on topamax and side effects, its an interesting journey with this drug, but I have found better results and less brain numbing side effects than with any other. Plus it works at a much lower dose. I notice when I don't take it and my old more severe lava flows and spasms start to creep back ;)

xx
