I had the exact same thing last lot of bloods taken a few weeks ago.....very painful! I thought it was just a bad injection...

The nurse said to me it could be the antiseptic rub that they use, but having seen your post just now I wonder......I have had a lot of bloods taken in the last few years (as I am sure we all have) but never have I experienced what I did last time.......I am due again, so hopefully it will be a lot better.......

Please keep this post updated if you find anything out and I will do the same.....

All the best

Keith.

Hi Keith, this has happened the past 3 times, the nurse told me the same thing about the antiseptic rub but Ive had it done many times with that before and it didn't hurt. I am going to mention it to my consultant next time BEFORE my bloods are taken as its putting me off getting them done. My arm is very sensitive afterwards too. Sorry to say but Im pleased someone else has had same experience lol!!

I have had that same experience, as well. You are not alone in it.

I spoke to the lead nurse today, she says the antiseptic wipe has to completely dry for 30 seconds before taking blood, Im not convinced personally, I think its more likely the swelling of the vessels but not sure so ignore me lol

If it were the antiseptic wipes, surely everyone would get the burning sensation...not just those with behects. When I have blood tests often I have another pustule almost as if I have had 2 blood tests in different places.

This has been used in the past to confirm my diagnosis of behcets [similar to the pathergy test]. This apparently happens because the inflammation goes down the veins and pops up somewhere else. The burning sensation maybe because of this, but not actually going as far as to produce a pustule.

It does make me laugh though, with the medical profession who seem to have this type of explanation for anything they don't understand.

We are such a weird bunch aren't we :D

I get this feeling sometimes too, but with me it feels more internal rather than on the skin so I don't think alcohol wipes are to blame for me. I used to think it was whoever had taken the bloods was responsible for it because it didn't always happen with every injection. I remember once when I did mention it to another nurse on one of my admissions that sometimes when others take my bloods I get that feeling. She said when a vein is used a lot sometimes it can hurt and this can occur more frequently depending on sometimes what medications are being pumped into them. I had IV's at that time but I do get this feeling sometimes on my monthly blood tests with nothing but blood being drawn.
