Sexual health nurse

Hi am having a bit of a problem trying to Get a job as a sexual health nurse. I don't have the experience but I really want to get in to this sector. Can any body give me some good advice. Or is there anyone who is a sexual health nurse to help me please.

Dear Bluestar,

You need to put more detail to advise you. I work in sexual health as an assistant without particular qualifications( two different sexual health teams) over the last 4 years.Sexual health nursing has many generic skills of nursing .communication,being able to lead and manage care,giving advice that should be evidence based,knowledge of sti and current treatment for both men/women and child, understanding of child protection and safeguarding adults,mentorship experience or qualifications, willingness and desire to grow in knowledge of contraceptive skills.i.e take courses into contraception recognised and sexual health.

Basically sexual health nursing is changing as s more organisations and gp are offering sexual health screening eg.virgin.

Am a staff nurse and I would like a career S a sexual health nurse but finding it hard to do good interview. I make clear that I don't hve experience but am very interested. But it seems to me that they always take people wid more experience.

Dear bluestar,

Experience is useful, yes, but having a candidate who is enthusiastic and is passionate about the specialty is in my view more important. Providing of course that you're not applying for a Band 6/7 post, where you would definitely need experience.

Larger centres may be more willing to take on inexperienced staff and will have an in house training programme.

I would suggest you try and spend some time in a clinic shadowing to gain some insight.

Can anyone who is in the sexual health profession as a staff nurse tell me the sort of questions they might ask a band 5 nurse, Cos I am having an interview soon
