Brown discharge before period

Hi there,

I’m experiencing brown discharge few days before my periods this has only recently been happening I’ve never had this problem before :/ should I be worried?

I was told by my OBGYN this is left over stale blood from your last period that the uterus is getting rid off as it prepares to shred again. Sometimes this can happen with hormonal changes.

Hi.. No, don't worry, it's not unusual. It can happen at the begining or end of a period, not usually anything to worry about..

However, if you get bleeding in between your periods, which keeps happening, then that's the time to have a chat with your GP.

Brown discharge is old blood, the acidic balance of the vagina changes it. As the other posters have mentioned , if it is persisting , make sure smears are up to date, STI screen if appropriate etc .

I’m only 23 I think you have to be 25 to have smear tests? And STI screening is all clear :/

Excellent. Yes you have to be 25 for cervical smears, although other problems like cervical polyps can happen in all age groups and can be identified by looking at your cervix. If your bleeding persists , gp or sexual health clinic for an assessment.
