son wants to go out all the time

Sunday we see him for visits but because he wants to go out we do not get to do activities or spend time with him. What should we do? Why does he want to go out all the time?

Sometimes the days of a week can be hard to tell apart. If you only visit once a week, it may be jarring and unexpected. He may also have strong and confusing emotions. Can you create a weekly picture calendar with pictures of activities occurring each day in order? If the calendar and plan is referred to often, it might help him recognize what is coming and feel more prepared. Seeing a plan for a return visit might also be reassuring. Does the staff have preferred activities available? If he can choose between three activities (again with pictures or objects to represent the activity) it might help curb that desire to go out as the “out” activity is not one that he can readily choose. I shared on myautismteam - a support group if you don't mind but I put healthunlocked user advised though

From my daughter, I’ve learnt sometimes it’s easier and more enjoyable for everyone to work with the autism. Could you not take him out yourselves as part and parcel of your visit? Picture timetables can also be useful as per your other reply. My experience as a parent has been that the unexpected and uncertainty are the enemy: minimise those and things can often be easier to handle on both sides.

I have to look after mum and dad who cannot walk so leaves little time to do those kind of things, he(son) stays out for very long time
