Hi everyone! My son is 5 and has autism. Recently he has started to spit on us where he is upset, or when he is told no. He spits even when he’s playing. He spits so much. He throws things, hits us, destroy things. Any advice on how to help the spitting? Is very very overwhelming and I want to cry

have you ever asked him ‘why’ he spits? sometimes why they do it as a reason behind it, even if it seems silly. it might help to show him healthy ways to get out his anger and frustration instead of spitting. you could also try giving him time outs in a designated peaceful and quiet area with some sensory toys, soft blankets, maybe some calming incense and color light that he likes when he’s acting out to help calm him. after time out, when he’s calmed down, you can explain why you put him in time out in case he doesn’t understand. hope that helps.

Yes he isn’t all the way verbal. He says a lot of things now, but not completely. Really it’s whenever we tell him no, let the spitting begin.
