I am considering residential care for my autistic 15 year old son! His behaviour at home is reducing me to a basket case.

What would my options be and what is the process and legal ramifications?

It will come down to what is available within your area. There are some SEN schools that offer 'full-time' boarding up to 19yrs of age as one potential option. Some charities will organise 'respite' care for specific time periods to offer you a 'holiday' from care work. NHS care support can also assist either at home or in alternative respite care facilities.

Try talking to your GP or SEN team about what would best suit you & your family & the options within your local area. Be firm & precise in that what you are asking for is what is best for all of you, your Autistic child included. Discuss the various options & the pros & cons of each (how much time you'll spend together/apart, what will be available to stimulate & support your child whilst in the alternative care, costs....) before deciding which is best for you all. Best wishes & good luck
