Hi there,

I have no idea what you are talking about. How is this related to ataxia? I obviously have no knowledge of this procedure but wish you well nonetheless. Neta

Hi neta

Ataxia is a greek word meaning 'lack of order'. Ataxia is a symptom of many different conditions, for example MS, but Ataxia also refers to a group of conditions in their own right where it is the primary diagnosis and is a syndrome (or a collection of symptoms). There are >60 causes of primary Ataxia known about, each with a different range of symptoms unique to each cause, but where the symptom of ataxia is common to all.

As such, Friedreich's ataxia (FA), only one of the causes of primary ataxia and the type Nikki has, has it's own range of symptoms. One of these symptoms is feet and ankle problems which is common to FA and in Nikki's case, is to be treated with surgery.

Ataxia being a symptom of many disorders and also being the name of a group of conditions in their own right is complicated and can lead to a lot of confusion and misunderstanding.

Best Wishes

Harriet

My ataxia is of an unknown kind and I have something mildly wrong with the tendons of my toes. My father had it severely, without having ataxia, and he had the tendons cut. He did not have any trouble with the operation and no trouble with his feet after that.

My Ataxia makes my legs very stiff and inflexible.

As II understand it the brain which controls the mucsles in my legs makes me walk in a peculiar stiff sort of way because the brain controlling my feet has been damaged by some unknown cause. With FA it is caused by a different source but we have similar symptoms.

I think with all of us our balance has been compromised.

yea i could be wrong but i think with ataxia balance is the first to go

Dear Nikki

I've had FA for 35 years and my feet are badly curved inwards. I recently had a consultation about this operation but decided against it, mainly because there was some concern that if my circulation is a bit slow there might be problems with the healing process. However someone on the Ataxia UK discussion forum had this successfully done and is pleased with the results.

Best Wishes for your op.and I'd be interested to hear from you afterwards.

With love

Hi thats fine im going to try and find out what I can at the pre-op. My biggest concern is no longer being able to stand transfer cos I have no other way of doing it

Hi, my daughter will need this op done soon, been trying to delay as long as poss because for her the recovery time in a wheelchair might mean she doesn't walk again. She us nearly 16 and wears splints on her feet and legs which keeps them in a good position but they are curving quite badly now. Igor both feet operated on a couple if years ago one at a time to cut the ligaments under my feet due to plantar fasciitis so I can sort of know what it's like. Good luck!

Dear Nikkistowe, Although I have ataxia and muscles get stiff, I don't have FA. Just want to wish you the best, as it sounds as though this surgery will be beneficial to you! ;o)
