Hello gossy
I used to have a lot of trouble with night time cramp until I started taking turmeric. I take 2 tablets but I am fairly certain it is the turmeric that stops the cramp.
I take one organic 400mg turmeric and one Opti 3 every morning and both again at night. If I am in trouble during the day I take an extra turmeric.
I THINK it is turmeric that helps, but the Opti 3 which is an EPA and DHA supplement, are good for people with my SCA1, might be useful too?
This is where I get the turmeric from
This is the Opti 3
If you take anything else please be very careful. This site is very good for discussing potential drug interactions and problems.
I hope this helps.
All the best

Hi,
I was diagnosed with Ataxia in 1997. Over the years previous, I must have had a variety of complaints but never knew is because of Ataxia. Since I have been diagnosed, I'll tell anyone who will listen.
Years ago I developed 'cramps' in my feet and legs at night and they were very severe. My doctor then prescribed 'Quinine Sulphate'. I have never had 'cramps' since.
I take 2 pills at night. I found they were so effective; I now take 2 pills one night and 1 pill the next.
If I 'freeze up'. I used to take Baclofen. Then I started to develop pains in my wrist at night. My consultant changed me over to 'Dantrolene'. The pain, although not as severe spread across both wrists. He then changed me to a drug called ‘Pregabalin’, it was as bad as 'Baclofen. I was in such severe pain. I asked my wife for one of her ‘Daclofenac’ pills for her back pain. It had no immediate effect but a week after taking the pill I was pain free every night. I had accidently fallen on the reason of my pain, I needed an ‘ant-inflammatory’. My GP prescribed a pill, I am now pain free!
As I am retired on health grounds, I do not get as tired as I should. I still go to bed at 11pm or just after. Sleep would not come, so I went to the doctor. He prescribed a non-addictive pill called ‘Zopliclone’. I got myself upto 2 pills a night. My GP said I was at the limit. I found if I woke up for a wee, even though I have Ataxia and I can’t walk. What little balance I have, went taking 2 pills. I reduced my pills to 1 ½. I still could not sleep through the night. We had recently been on holiday to the USA and I bought my mother some over the counter sleep aids. She did not use them, so I did. I found with the Zopliclone and the Tylenol PM, although restless, I got a night’s sleep. I had a friend who spent their winter in Florida, she kept me supplied. Recently she sent me some pills from Walmart. Although they look the same, they are much cheaper. In future I’ll use them.
You’ll find everyone has their remedies that help them, these are mine. I don’t know if they’ll be any use to you. They’ve helped me!
