Top ataxia consultant : Who is the best neurology... - Ataxia UK
Top ataxia consultant
The nearest Ataxia Clinic to you would be at Sheffield. Hopefully someone who lives in your area will be able to help.
I am further south and go to Oxford. Recently I have decided to be referred to my local hospital as I do not want to travel far any more.
Hi guyb. I am also in Yorkshire and my Consultant is Dr Shanmugarajah at Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield. Dr S is very good and helpful and part of an Ataxia team (which includes a nurses clinic). I have no knowledge of other Consultants but recommend Dr S, if your GP will refer you.
GOOD LUCK
I am in Huddersfield and see Proffeser Hajjavesilou at Sheffield...Royal Hallamshire its an ataxia cliniç would highly reccomend he his the main man,you need to ask your GP to refer you ...Good Luck 😁
Thanks I’m in Huddersfield too
may have asked you befoŕe but whereabouts in Hudds?
I think eveveryone will each have their own option, I am under professor Hadjivillassiou from Sheffield teach hospital like a lot of others on here, with no bedside skills, stuffy & someone who neither myself nor my husband can fully converse with but a lot will disagree with me & I also see a neurological consultant at st Luke’s in Bradford -Dr Lansbury who I find the most loveliest dr I’ve ever seen who I can freely talk to openly & know he will give me an honest answer back even if it’s one I don’t want to hear.
I hope you find a good one, as in my case having someone I can talk to & feel as ease with makes everything else bearable.
Apart from feeling good, do you feel your condition is improving?

No not at all, I have gone rapidly down hill this past year, with varies things, the worst one being is starting with extremely painful muscle contractions which I’ve recently been prescribed muscle relaxation tablets.
I'm sorry to hear that! Why put your trust in people who are not able to improve your condition? Anxiety is the result of Government/s fomenting policy decisions enacted during at least the last 20 yrs to garner control over the cash cow that is currently the NHS. Get to grips with your level of fear and anxiety and measure your improvement. Difficult!!
I have no medical training. I write from my own experiences of my life, I am old enough to have a shedfull of those. The use of phsycology is a control medium! Beware.
I wish you well and A STRESS FREE 2020
I live in the West Midlands but feel it is worth travelling to Sheffield to see professor Hadjivassilou. Ask your GP to refer you to his clinic.
My wife was referred to Dr Vinjam at Leeds General Infirmary. Within 2 minutes, he had diagnosed Cerebellar Ataxia. This was a second opinion we had sought, as our previous Consultant had determined that she had MS, by default. Still undergoing tests, but this chap really seems to be on the ball, and interested (which the previous guy wasn't).
Amongst other things, I asked about measuring her deterioration, and he's arranging for my wife to be seen by another specialist friend who deals with dizziness (normally people with ear problems etc.). The reason for this is that his friend has expensive, state of the art equipment which he can use to make the necessary measurements for a baseline on which to compare future measurements. After 3 years of largely feeling ignored, we're feeling quite intoxicated by the progress and quite upbeat now.
