Restless Leg Syndrome

A friend, here in the U.K….diagnosed with SCA6…..has had NHS treatment ….an Iron Infusion. And not specifically because she was iron deficient.

‘Although not a prespecified endpoint, these figures suggest a use of iron not just as monotherapy, but as an adjunctive therapy and means to reduce impacts of other pharmacotherapies and potentially their long-term side effects.’

This might not be everyone’s first thought but…it’s possible an Iron Infusion might help.

Restless legs……..this is a frustrating symptom many of us cope with, and there can be a seemingly fruitless search for relief.

But.. Iron supplementation may be all it takes to reduce symptoms of restless legs syndrome.

The link between RLS and iron does not just depend on low blood iron levels. Instead, RLS may be caused by low levels of iron in the brain. It's possible to have a low brain level of iron but a normal blood level of iron. The two levels can be different.

Diagnosing low brain iron

Brain iron deficiency should be one of the first considerations when looking for a cause of RLS. But diagnosing low brain iron is tricky.

This treatment is available in the U.K.

***Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is specifically related to migraines (4). RLS is a common sensory-motor disorder of the nervous system, which is characterized by a strong desire to move the legs to relieve discomfort. It usually occurs at rest and often worsens at night.

’In summary, the comorbidity of migraine and RLS may be related to vitamin D deficiency.’
