weight loss

Good morning. My brother has been suffering from SCA1 ataxia for years.

At the moment he feeds himself with baby food and smoothies but he is losing a lot of weight and is always hungry.

Do you know if his weight loss is due to the disease that causes poor absorption of food or to the type of diet?

Any experiences similar to this one?

🤔 He may be eating in this way because he copes with swallowing/choking issues. He may have already had advice from a Speech and Language Therapist for these symptoms.

But…it’s a possibility that he isn’t getting enough nutrients..and this is leading to weight loss.

If he hasn’t already done so..it’s advisable to seek advice from his Neurologist, or GP.

My mother lost weight when she had difficulty swallowing.

I recently had a stay in hospital and was prescribed "Aymes" protein shakes. They are lovely and come in different flavours. They can be purchased over the counter.
