🙂I haven’t actually had this done myself..my MRI showed Cerebellar Atrophy.
Lumbar puncture (spinal tap). In some cases of ataxia, this may be a helpful test. A needle is inserted into the lower back (lumbar region) between two lumbar bones (vertebrae) to remove a small sample of cerebrospinal fluid. The fluid, which surrounds and protects your brain and spinal cord, is sent to a laboratory for testing.
Yes I've had a few without any positive results. It's important to remain lying down for 24 hours and sip water through a straw otherwise you'll have severe headache. X
Good luck good to rule out things. I’ve had a few and would agree it’s important to stay still definitely the last one as an appointment was much better than the others in an emergency situation. Be sure to take it easy afterwards.
I have had a few but I have never had to stay in hospital. The whole thing lasts 20 minutes but you should remain still they use the fluid to test for infection and autoimmune diseases that could be causing the ataxia. In my case however they were all negative and my autoimmune ataxia was diagnosed by stomach biopsy and blood test in Sheffield, London where I live didn’t do the test and referred me to Sheffield as you are allowed two options on the NHS.
Blood (genetic) testing really ought to be done first. It is much less intrusive and I should imagine cheaper than two days of hospitalisation.
Unless you need an anaesthetic for the lumbar puncture, which most people do not, unless they suffer with severe tremors, hospitalisation should not be necessary.
