🙂I haven’t actually had this done myself..my MRI showed Cerebellar Atrophy.

Lumbar puncture (spinal tap). In some cases of ataxia, this may be a helpful test. A needle is inserted into the lower back (lumbar region) between two lumbar bones (vertebrae) to remove a small sample of cerebrospinal fluid. The fluid, which surrounds and protects your brain and spinal cord, is sent to a laboratory for testing.

Yes i think i have at last understood x

Yes I've had a few without any positive results. It's important to remain lying down for 24 hours and sip water through a straw otherwise you'll have severe headache. X

Thats probably why they want to keep me in hospital Not possible for me to lay down at home i live alone x

Good luck good to rule out things. I’ve had a few and would agree it’s important to stay still definitely the last one as an appointment was much better than the others in an emergency situation. Be sure to take it easy afterwards.

This is used to rule things out usually. It can however indicate autoimmune issues that can cause CA and be treated. This is rare.

Thankyou for your positive answer Would nt that be Nice if it could be cured

I ll have to look CA up

Anycase you have answered and i Thankyou you my question that no one else had thé answer for 🥰

Well i am going down hill very quikely ..i must have had this antaxia for years but they only started looking into it in 2019

Since last septembre i topple backwards and forwads ended up 2 times in hospital xxx

CA = cerebellar ataxia. Rarely it can be an autoimmune issue and treatable. Lumber puncture is unlikely to provide conclusive evidence on it’s own.

Well see but they have done everything else x

I have had a few but I have never had to stay in hospital. The whole thing lasts 20 minutes but you should remain still they use the fluid to test for infection and autoimmune diseases that could be causing the ataxia. In my case however they were all negative and my autoimmune ataxia was diagnosed by stomach biopsy and blood test in Sheffield, London where I live didn’t do the test and referred me to Sheffield as you are allowed two options on the NHS.

I would do a blood test first to rule out all the common SCAs

All blood tests have been done and at least 4 scans I know know why they are doing thé Lumber ponction x

Blood (genetic) testing really ought to be done first. It is much less intrusive and I should imagine cheaper than two days of hospitalisation.

Unless you need an anaesthetic for the lumbar puncture, which most people do not, unless they suffer with severe tremors, hospitalisation should not be necessary.

I am sorry, I was mentioning the cost to the health services, not to you personally. We are extremely lucky to have a fantastic National Health Service in the UK as well!

Beth had a lumbar puncture, I was sick thinking about it but in the event she was brilliant. She had the whole team singing George Ezra 'Shotgun' whilst it was happening and manged to turn an anxiety ridden moment into a really funny one!
