Digestive problems : I have had digestive problems... - Ataxia UK
Digestive problems
Me, sluggish digestive system, indigestion. Struggle digesting meat, particularly red meat.
How long have you had your symptoms and what are they?
Pains in your stomach and feeling bloated and hard stomach
Hi, what are your symptoms? Thx!
Any BM issues? Any Gait issues?
It may be due to less movement due to Ataxia, try to keep on the moving even it’s for a little while,
Stay Active,
I suffer from acid reflux and heartburn..but not all the time. It comes and goes, and I tend to associate it with not drinking enough while eating. This is something I’ve had long before ataxia was diagnosed, at one time I had an Endoscopy because I was worried I may have an stomach ulcer.
Lack of movement may also have a link, and also eating slumped on the sofa 🙄
I use Gaviscon ADVANCE as advised by eating/swallowing therapist. Lansparazol (I think this is spelt correctly) prescribed by GP.
As already mentioned it is more likely a side effect of Ataxia.. I am prescribed pills for acid reflux but also have to avoid certain foods that cause my stomach to bloat or cheese causes constipation.
Hi Tazwaz. It is really a shot in the dark but worth considering. I suffered with IBS most of my adult life and decided 18months ago feeling desperate to go completely gluten free. Researched information as much as possible beforehand and decided however difficult it would be, it was worth the try.
Well didn't expect to have the positive outcome that happened and now following a private blood test advised by a knowledgeable nutritional therapist am also dairy free.
For the first time in very many years I eat a very healthy diet. Nuts, seeds, onions, garlic etc. So sticking to the FODMAPDIET for years which is very restrictive, did not help me at all.
It is also restrictive df and gf. 99% of the time I cook from scratch so hard work too and when you have fatigue with ataxia it takes planning and motivation. But I would say to anyone with digestive issues to try gluten free. If you do it wholeheartedly you should quickly know if gluten is the problem.
Be careful as a lot of the gf food out there is highly processed and to be honest shoul not form the staple of a healthy diet.
I believe I have gluten ataxia, but have yet to meet a health professional who agrees and even knows what it is!
Good luck, and maybe a leap of faith is needed!
After all you have nothing to lose.
I've seen 2 drs now my symptoms I had reflux for sometime but I was put on HRT for the menopause and the bloating and nausea started it got that bad I stopped HRT but I still feel the same can you tell me what it feels like and it may be something to do my ataxia
