Hi there,

About 6 months after I was diagnosed with Cerebellar Ataxia, I tried acupuncture as no medical treatment was offered (This was in 1999). I continued to have acupuncture until lockdown. It helped me to cope with my progressive condition and I always felt re-energised both mentally an physically. However, as you are probably aware, there is NO CURE (well not yet).

So far as muscle spasms are concerned, I do get dystonia occasionally, nearly always at night and it can be very painful. The neurologist suggested a small dose of BACLOFEN at night which I did try but I am not convinced it was of any help, plus I had some strange side effects.

Acupuncture is rarely available on the NHS and can be very expensive done privately, certainly in the long term. By all means try acupuncture, it may help but do make sure he/she/ they are registered with the British Acupuncture Council. If done by a qualified, experienced acupuncturist it is painless. Lorraine
