Hope for Cerebella Atrophy sufferers

I was diagnosed three weeks ago, my boyfriend of nearly two years said he couldn't give me the emotional support I needed and went. I now live on my own with my two dogs. Last night I used the bathroom and fell backwards onto the toilet seat, really hurt.

Can you get a carer? A family member? Do you live alone?

I take care of my son who has DRPLA and he couldn't do it alone.

Thank for the reply, yes I do live on my own, I only have a daughter who lives near me about one and half miles away. I can manage most of the time, it's just occasionally when my wobbles get the better of me

Hi Sorry to hear that your boyfriend has left, good you have a daughter for help though. I find I am more off balance in the dark or low light or standing on the spot. I have a cat, she is so loving, she sits with me all the time. I think pets are a comfort. Wishing you all the best

Hi, I didn't realise how bad I am because he was a good prop. I find I keep bumping into things at home now. It's frightening.

I have grab bars in the bathroom. I also installed wooden hand 🖐 railings in my rest of my home 🏠.

Maridale, I hv fallen everywhere in my house... on the toilet bruising my buns, in the tiny hallway, off of my bed in the night, getting a black eye on my nightstand, off of my back porch, cracking my heal bone, etc., I live alone & hv to remind myself to MOVE SLOWLY, doing the furniture crawl & grabbing door jams. Finding a caregiver might be a good idea.

I have fallen and broken my shoulder back the end of May and I fell a few weeks ago, luckily no damage. It's rewarding to know you're managing on your own.

Hi Maridale, It might be a good idea to let your nearest neighbor know abt your balance issues. I had to let both of mine know and also a neighbor down the street.

They might not be able to help on a daily basis, but they are aware of my sit. & check up now & then.

I wear an alarm/pendant for days I am alone - gives me and my family reassurance. I use a 4 wheel walker too xx
