Cramp.

Hello there,

I have just joined, I was (probably, as the advert says) one of the fittest 60 year olds around, I did Aikido, cycled, running, walked a lot, kayaked, went to the gymnasium (gym) at least 3 times a week.

On returning from the gym on a Sunday during December 2008 I started to stagger a bit.

I went to the doctor the following day and to cut a long story short 6 months later after being in hospital I left in a wheelchair (I had big problems walking) and my speech was slurred.

The hospital doctor said my cerebellar ataxia was caused by a mystery virus and over the last 9 years I have learned to walk again and improved my speech.

Well since my illness bad cramps has been a common problem, mainly in my fingers.

I researched it on the WEB and I have found Dioralyte (it replaces lost water and body salts) to work well for the cramps and relief is fast.

I hope if you try it for cramp that it works as affectively for you, best wishes from Judd123.

I am so sorry this happened to you but very glad to hear you have learned to walk again. This happened to my daughter 18 months ago when she was 6. I worry every day about whether she will ever make a full recovery. May I ask how far your recovery has taken you so far in Percentage terms, if 100% is back to how you were before this happened? I know everyone’s story is unique but it somehow helps me to know of other people who are going through something similar. Thank you and good luck with your continued recovery.

I was previously a civil servant for over 16 years and before that in the Royal Air Force (RAF) as an Electronic Technician for 22 years, being fit and active physically was just in my nature, I once while in the RAF did the Nijmegen Walk in Holland, 25 miles a day for 4 consecutive days.

I can manage a maximum of 3.5 miles now and it takes me at least 2 days to recover.

I have been fortunate as my illness occurred at the age of 60 so I have experienced most of my life with full fitness.

My daughter Georgia got meningitis just before she was 5 and was left completely deafened in both ears, it was one of the saddest days in my life when I was told by the hospital doctor, but I asked her years later how she managed and she replied that she knew no difference.

Georgia is now 37, has a daughter of 6 and is living her life, bless her.

Georgia had mentally overcome the deafness whereas I was still weighed down with it years later.

A good book to read is The Plastic Mind by Sharon Begley, I have found it really enlightening over many years, I also send you this poem, these words have assisted me over the last 9 years,

DESIDERATA.

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons that yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world if full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

The late and amazingly intellectual Stephen Hawkin was given by the hospital doctors 2 years in 1963 and he passed away in 2018, 55 years after his prognosis.

I will never be what I once was, but it’s so true when people say “it’s not what happens to you in life, it’s how you deal with it.

It’s still life and life has many facets, I would of course like to ramble the Lake District but that time has past and I deal with now.

My best wishes to you and your family Kirvine2017,

Do not let anything in life drag you down.

My sincerest best wishes to your daughter.
