Sudden vertigo

Does anyone have or had sudden vertigo? The is not the constant swaying of ataxia rather a sudden spinning sensation brought on (I think) by looking downward w/o knees bent. It feels like being on a merry go round at warp speed. it stops when eyes are shut or glasses applied or efforts are made to slow things down. Is this an eye things? Ataxia thing or both??? A version of this is on the USA site which I find quite complex N

Hi Neta, I have had it and it is nothing to do with Ataxia, with me it was an inner ear infection so off to the Doc's with you to get is checked as it really is unpleasant.

I didn't have any pain either but if you get the feeling that the floor is about to come up and meet you and how else do I explain it! You can't even watch tv when they do the high shots as it feels like you are going to fall off a building, it makes you feel sick. Stairs are hell, even more so than normal.

It is a condition that can be treated. Or I am totally mad so you can ignore me!

You are not mad. In my, the feeling is that we (me) are traveling very fast. It seems like en eye thing but maybe I am wrong. What brings it on is jerky neck movements, it seems..Neta

Hi. I am the opposite. When standing or walking I cannot look up without holding onto something, if walking I have to stop first, otherwise I start to fall backwards. But I have the same problems when watching tv. I cannot watch the helicopter shots, or roof shots looking down as my stomach 'churns'. Before, heights did not worry me and could climb ladders, cliff top walks etc. Now I cant look out of a window above the first floor. I even get nervous walking down slopes. I have mentioned this to my consultant but did not get much response.

To me it is the same thing and GP's are better with this as your consultant is always going to look at your condition, we still get other infections and it was my mum that told me that vertigo is a condition, we get blinded, we are still going to get colds and other stuff! I know how scary vertigo is as I fell down the stairs more than once. It may not be an ear infection for you, but the point is you have to find out!

Hi Denise, thanks for that. It has never been explained to me who I should see about symptoms. Do I see my GP about things that could be affecting me by CA?, such as balance issues, or do I speak to the consultant? I guess I should see my GP and take it from there and see how things go. I did speak to GP about this before but, like the consultant, did not get much response. Confusing....

Yes I know this, But I am describing something else....a sudden burst of vertigo, I have noticed that this comes following a sharp neck and downward movement. Thanx 4 your input

I have the same spinning sensation as you. I woke up in the middle of the night on friday and everything was spinning,as I turned over in bed the spinning increased, these episodes are not triggered by anything and I never have any warning signs, they always make me physically sick and takes days to recover.

Right. I think its an eye/brain thing.. It seems to be triggered by sudden neck movement like turning in bed and sudden stoppage of walking but who knows for sure? These attacks are relatively brief but powerful. I think the best thing is to lie still and wait them out; Do you have CA??? xxx N

Hi Netta, yes I have CA, these attacks could be related to sudden neck movement as the episode I had before started when I looked up and turned my head, but this time I woke up dizzy so not sure. I just lay down and have to wait for it to pass, sometimes they last for an hour sometimes a whole day.I just assumed they are part of ataxia and others had the same thing.

Dear Heather, For some reason I could not move the cursor normally. Yes I can avoid vertigo by moving my head very slowly. N

Hi neta

I current have Labrinthitus, inner ear disease which is affecting the ears high pressure in back of head sometimes and sea sick feel when driving which I am managing with betahistine and ginger capsules I don't get dizziness but swaying to upper legs and hips it can make the upper legs very stiff
