Hi there,

Anything new going on in the world of ataxia and stem cell research? All the posts I read here were 5 years old and the links were unresponsive. It is now July 2017

Hi Neta,

I read an article in the Benendean Health magazine two days ago about stem cell therapy. The article is mainly about the treatment and "cure" over many years of a patient diagnosed with "Aplastic Anaemia". I quote "Transplantation of stem cells has proved a breakthrough in the treatment of blood cancers and blood disorders".

There is mention in the article about neurological conditions but there is a warning about seeking treatment for ms, parkinsons etc. abroad (outside the UK) by Prof. Noble of UKSCF. He says "I would never entirely exclude going abroad, but where is the follow-up if things go wrong once they return home?"

Obviously I cannot quote everything in the article but it did make interesting reading. A footnote to the article says "For more details: UK stem cell foundation ukscf.org and Anthony Nolan anthonynolan.org."

My impression from reading this article is that stem cell therapy could hold the key for treatment in the future, but it is a long, long way off.
