Big Garden Bird Watch.

Did anyone out there do the big garden bird watch. I thought that I would give it a go as It was very easy to do online so I got the binoculars out and hope'd for something a little rare to come along. Well as expected nothing too exiting happened but our pair of song thrushes and pair of blackcaps made a breaf showing other than that it was the usual sparrows jackdaws magpies etc. Did anyone see anything unusual?

Well I think it was unusual lol. 3 Robins in the garden at the same time? They didnt seem to be fighting so could it have been its young?

Apart from that nothing much different, my usual blue tits, coal tits and great tits which are my favourites, chaffinches, blackbird and sparrows. For two winters I had a woodpecker come for food but it didnt come back this year :(. I get a lot of pleasure from my garden birds though.

Yes I love to watch our little feathered friends out there entertaining us with thier crazy antics. We don't get a lot in our garden as we only put kitchen scraps out on the bird table at the bottom of the garden as we have two cats. I don't like to encourage them to come to close because of that. Cats and birds don't mix very well! . When I go and visit my Dad he gets all sorts right outside his kitchen window,Pheasants,Great Spotted Woodpeckers,Nuthatches,Finches,Tits etc and the dreaded Sparrow Hawk pays a visit occassionally, everything just disappears untill the all clear is sounded and they all return from thier little hiding places. We have had as many as 5 robins at the same time in our fairly small garden but I think this only happens before nesting time come's into play, then it gets very territorial and its war out there!, entertaining for us though.

My neighbour has a palace of a bird station so, although my garden does attract a number of birds, we now get so many more visiting. One thing I have noticed over the past few years is 3 or 4 male robins in the garden at one time (females too) - I would have thought this was unusual but don't know for sure. I must admit, Robins are my favourite bird, I just love the way they're so round when they fluff themselves up to keep warm. They're here all the year round too, is that unusual?

Yes! We had a fieldfare! I didn't know what it was until I had looked through my binoculars and then checked my birdbook.

We dont normally get them, but they will come into gardens looking for berries apparently. They are a member of the thrush family.

We get robins all year round too Libby, and they have learned to use the hanging feeders.

We are lucky enough to get a wide variety of birds in our garden and just like everyone, we get immense pleasure at watching their antics. Our regular Robin is happy enough to 'share' food, unlike one a few years back who would readily act like a bully. One yearly visitor and my favourite is a tiny 'Jennie' Wren. I love to watch that little bird dart about, wish I had as much energy!
