Inhaled steroid ie corticosteroids are preventative medicines they act in a way to help prevent inflammation of the airways and lungs. If you are very mild copd you may not need them, but if your current lung medicine is not working for you best to go back to the doc for further assessment.

Thank You for the answere on steroids

Hi

Inflammation in the airways produces mucous. Mucous is the stuff that gets infected with bacteria and causes chest infections. Also you cough because of the inflammation and because you need to get rid of the mucous. So steroid inhalers help to prevent the inflammation as Zoee says. Steroid inhalers are no where near the strength of steroid tablets.
