PR is brilliant, you do warm up excersise then about 12 different excesises dumbells(very light ones) stretch each arm up in turn holding them, throw a ball at a wall and catch it,steps(up one step down one step),mini squats holding onto back of a chair, each of these excersies you do for 2 mins, trying to think what others, when finished them we do more excersises as at begining, haven`t explained this very well, but it is great, you will feel the benifit of going,at the end we used to have a coffee/tea and a chat,as the result of mine I got to know and got on well with approx 8 people,6 of us now meet every Wed for tea/coffee and a natter,we help each other if one is feeling down or whatever,if one is in hospital we visit,we are always at the end of the phone for each other,so I would def recomend PR,wish I could go again, good luck,I`m sure you will like it.Cheers
Irene
How brilliant that you`ve made friends through PR. Does anyone know if you can go on this more than once, it`s years since I did it. Maybe different areas have different rules. I`m from Cumbria. Best wishes mskpjb(Sheila)
Would love to meet someone with the same complaint and have a good chat, just having someone who understands would be good.Thank you so much the more confidence i get the better. Its helping so much being able to talk on this site
The PR course is the best thing a lung patient can do to help themselves as it involves everything about managing your illness and how to avoid further lung damage and prolong lung health. All that including the exercise. A course to be enjoyed and to reap the benefits on offer with applying everything your learn on the course.
Search the BLF unlocked for Pulmonary Rehabilitation Videos, there is more than one but for starters check this blog out:

sounds good im looking forward to it nervously excited. It starts on monday thanks
When i told my Chest consutant i was attending a Gym, He told me it wont repair your damaged lungs but will keep them as they are if you keep on exercising.
I cannot tell you how it changed my husbands life - now thats some statement!! Not just the excercise and showing him that he can be breathless and needs to get fit - showing him the right excercises, meeting other people with COPD and the information has been fantastic - he can manage his condition so much better. He did the course a year ago sort of relunctantly, not sure what it could offer, but is a transformed advocate of pulmonary rehab. Good luck and enjoy it - I hope you get as much from this course as my husband did. TAD xx
How long does the course last thanks
i can only second the above go for it and enjoy

We do an hour of exercises and an hour of information. You do things at your own pace so its not about how you compare with others. We do wall pressups, a 6 minute walk, situps from a chair, step ups, exercise bike and , for the adventurous, a treadmill. Definitely worth going to.
How long does it take to get rid of the fear of getting out of breath when you first starting exercising, as my confidence is quite low on this.Having copd and haemiphlius infuenzae i also have just been told i have a low iron count so ive been put on folic acid. The reason im saying about them is because all the problems i have have the same symtons and the main one is breathlessness.I only started folic tablets today so i need to let them kick in but i am starting the rehab programme on monday. How long does a full course last.Thank you for ansering this is a great site with some very nice people
The people at my PR explain about the breathing so don't worry. They have your medical history about the COPD. They will help you . I would explain your fear though as I think there it's best they know how you feel so they can adjust to your needs. Most PR seems to last 8 to 10 weeks. It is definitely worth it.
its that good i joined the gym when it had finished great thing to do
it is definitely worth going dont be afrad because everone is in the same boat as you u will get to know alot about COPD ETC hope you go
I agree with all of the above, at the first session they do a walking/breathing test and do the same on the last session and it showed that my husband had improved. Of course when it had finished we fell by the wayside and suffered the consequences but have now joined a local group (Yeovil) called Breathability which has some superb equipment and we do a warm up then 3 minutes on each machine (16 machines in total) then a cool down, all for £2 a week. Enjoy it, do what you can and keep it up. Good luck
I completely agree with all you above, PR is to be thoroughly recommended. After a few months of Respiratory Exercise class I was almost too fit to go through PR, but hey I just squeaked in, and so glad I did. The improvement I was able to make was soooo good. I felt physically and emotionally much better. Fitter and more confident, so much so that like baxter1 I graduated to the gym, and I know that through the winter, which is my tricksy time, I have the tools to maintain my fitness. Once my head understood how much exercise can make a difference to the condition then it was not difficult to stay motivated and continue to exercise.
So if you get the chance to get on a PR course then grab it with both hands...know that you will gain from some happy body movement-yay!
Yay! That is good news and sincerely hope that you will find it helps you feel better. Let us know how you get on wont you?
Me too, a very happy and satisfied recipient of PR. Not only the exercises, but all the information, and of course the socialising with other old crocks!!!! I learned a hell of a lot about lots of different things to do with my health, how to control it, diet, medication, lifestyle, loads of stuff. If you haven't been offered this, please nag your doctor, it DOES HELP!
Yes, like others I fall by the wayside with exercising, but it is always 'there' to call on, and I refer to the notes too!
Hi Kay I go to Pulmonary Rehab at Palatine Leisure Centre. It lasts approx 90 mins. The 1st hour is exercise followed by a talk, each week has a different subject I.e. breathing techniques, medications, oxygen therapy. I'm the only person with PIG most have COPD or Bronchiastitis.
