Just been to the Docs this morning. Keeping me on Atrovent, it must be working it stops the wheez I get first thing in a morning. I'm still occasionally bringing dark green phlegm up, a couple of times per month I'd say. Dr says she can't hear anything on my chest and it's clear of infection. I've been told that they don't need to see me now for a year when I'll be called in for a check up and a spirometry test, unless I'm unwell that is. So I still don't know my lung capacity and I would be interested to know even though I'm told it's good. I'm exercising every day and walking regularly though this weather at the moment is stopping some of the walking. Having said that my cough has virtually gone and the phlegm isn't as regular as it was. We're told to stay out of situations that can cause execerbations but I'm finding that easier said than done. Everywhere I walk there's smokers, every time I pass someone in the street smoking I hold my breath till I get by them and that doesn't help sometimes depending on which way the wind is blowing. There's certain colleagues at work that smoke and even relatives of mine that'll light up in front of me without any regard whatsoever. It's me that has to move away from them!

Not sure if your recent appt was with your hospital doctor or not...most GP surgeries do spirometry tests so maybe that would be an option to find out your lung capacity. I do get where your coming from with other people smoking near you i really think they have no understanding how bad this disease can be for us.I use 02 which is visible but smokers still sit next to me with no regard to my health or safety like you i have to move away! Anyway take care ..

Good news then hun, it is frustrating when people ust simply don't think about their actions and the effect. It's habit isn't it but I am sure if you asked them not to, they wouldn't do it in front of you again. Try it. You never know!

Hi Wiggins, glad to hear that your chest is clear and that things are going well for you. You are certainly doing all the right things to stay healthy and keep the condition at bay. As far as your lung capacity is concerned, if you have ever had a spirometry test then your fev1 will be recorded in your notes somewhere. It is within your rights to ask for it if you have not already been told. Simply ask your GP for it on your next appointment - take pen and paper with you and jot it down so you can keep a record of it over the years. Auntymary

Hi Auntymary

I had a Spirometry test at the beginning of April, where I got my diagnosis from. When I was diagnosed I didn't really know anything about the disease. Anyhow I have since asked my Dr what my lung capacity is and she said she couldn't tell me because she needed the graph from the spirometry machine to tell and she didn't have it because the nurse has lost it. All she could say was that my capacity is good. I surmise that's so because I'm told I have very mild COPD and although I do get breathless going up hills and slopes etc and I have a never ending cough and sputum production I'm not bad. I've even taken to jogging on the spot for a five or six mins a day which I've added to my excercise. However as I say I would like to know what my capacity is now so I have a reference point for when I am told which may be next year now.

Hello Wiggins, people are not going to change, You could wait your whole life. You must do what is right for you and if that means moving out of harms way so be it. I so understand your frustration though.
