Short story

From the age of about 7 up to 12 we used to go on holiday with my dad`s brother Ernest and his wife Evelyn. Ernest was everybody`s favourite uncle. My two older sisters used to call him Uncle Sausage for obvious reasons, he liked sausages. We usually went in either a caravan or early version of mobile home a tent on wheels. We went up as far as Inverness and down as far as Polperro. Bothe Ernest and evelyn could drive and long journeys didn`t seem to worry anybody.

One year however, we went with my dad`s elser brother Albert and auntie Ivy. Not the same fun person at all. Albert was a skilled sawsmith, a lay preacher and amateur photographer. No digital cameras in those days but basic camera with need of ligt meter to get good photos. We were on the West coast of Scotland and Albert wanted to take a photo of the sunset. We stopped and Albert found the best position and started to get his camera ready. After what seemed an eternity, my dad was starting to complain, that it was already past time for eating. Albert continued with the task in hand.

Eventually, my dad shouted "Albert, ah tha tekin a photo o sunset or waitin fo sunrise?"

The photo was quickly taken. It was also the only time we went with Albert and Ivy.

Uncle Sausage and Uncle Sunset. I wonder what your dad might have been called by his nephews? Great story. 😜

Not many ephews and nieces. Ernest had no children. Albert had 2 daughters. His sister had no children. The 2 nieces always called him Uncle Henry, as far as I can remember. There is still 1 of them alive, but the Ward family will disappear. My daughter has 2 children, but only the male parent has any say in the name. They are not married, but married or not their surname is Dellac. Even my wife has to use her maiden name in anything official. We were once at the hospital in Toulouse and she handed over her passport as proof of identity and was told/questioned "your passport is wrong!" Oviously her pass port says beverly Ward nee Young. Letters are still addressed to Mm. Young Ward, Beverly.

Napoleon has a lot to answer for in France. All the original codes that were developed are never changed, they just add mre bits to them. Result is lots and lots of books, always bound in red wit the words CODE RURAL, CODE MILITAIRE etc . Some of them must be 10 cm think, perhaps more.

Frencj administration is always being simplified, simplified being a euphamism for more complicated.

Compared to France the different government systems work well.

Have a good afternoon, Chris.
