Dental treatment

I am a carer for someone on oxygen 24/7.She has not been to the dentist for some time now and has a couple of possibly broken teeth.

I have tried one dentist who advises that she would have to come off oxygen for treatment.

She could for a maximum of 20 minutes but if the treatment was to be longer, he wasn't able to advise.

Does anyone out there have experience of dental treatment and how it works under circumstances like this?

Thank you 😊

You client should discuss this with her doctors. Only they can advise on whether or not she would be ok to be without oxygen for a prolonged period of time. Or if she could have part of the treatment and have regular breaks.

Also I would get a second opinion as to whether or not she does need to come off oxygen for the entire process or just part of it.

Should she not be going to a dental unit at a hospital.

I am on oxygen 24/7 and have been for 3 ½ years. Last year I broke a tooth (blooming toffee!) and my dentist mended it. I stayed on my oxygen the whole time. It took about 40 minutes. I have 4 monthly hygienist appointments which last 30 minutes and stay on my oxygen. I have never been asked to stop using it.

I would get a second opinion.

When I visit my dentist he always says I may keep my oxygen on if I prefer.

Thank you everyone for your replies. It's encouraging Millyboo that you are still receiving regular treatment and staying on oxygen. I need to do more research and try more surgeries to see how they operate and if they will take her as a patient. We do have a dental hospital quite close by, so that is worth considering.

I kept my oxygen on for the whole of the treatment. 2 fillings. The canular is on the nose not the mouth so there's no problem
