I am very underweight. I started with too many deserts but my good cholesterol went up. I am a small eater except for deserts. Does anyone have any ideas how I can gain weight. I’d be happy to hear from you.

Maybe a nutritionist or dietician could help? We seem to have quite a few that advertise on local facebook. Our gp surgery also has one, so I assume that would nhs. Good luck!
What you need is something that looks extremely tasty and gets the juices flowing. How about fish , chips and mushy peas?
When I had a bad infection a few years ago I lost a lot off weight due to not having a big appetite, the GP prescribed me a ten day course of 5mg prednisolone and a supply of Ensure plus drinks very tasty, they certainly helped gain weight and a better appetite.
Thank you 6538 originally my prescription was for ensure but somehow it was changed to foodlink I don’t know who changed it. Obviously food link is a great deal cheaper I have to prepare the drink myself whereas ensure is already for drinking perhaps I should get in touch with my doctor
Maybe they can switch you back to Ensure it is worth a go. Everything is being based on cost but at what cost to the patient. I ended up ordering my own Ensure and Fortisip.
I found eating lots of different flavours in small amounts kept me a bit more interested. If I ate cream I would have a thick clotted cream, lots of good quality olive oil in mash. Thick beef stew. I was trying to eat every few hours too.
I am now on steroids and my weight and appetite has improved a great deal.
Hope things improve soon. xx
Hi Osha, I'm also very underweight and was prescribed "nualtra Altrajuce drinks. I get them on repeat prescription delivered to me. Although I'm still very underweight at least I know they are giving me lots of vitamins and minerals and hopefully at some point will help me put on weight. Might be worth a try. 😊❤️xxx
Oh thanks Nila. I will ask my doctor about that. I’ve been using foodlink which doesn’t seem to have made any difference
I was very thin 2 years ago, started with a diet and I would not let go. I am a very faddy eater but, that does not stop me gaining weight, I am 3 pounds over my BMI . Working food out is problomatic, probably you need to be referred to a dietition if you think you are underweight,
Well Ern007. I tried that once. She suggested that I keep a bowl of nuts by the computer so I could nibble. I nibbled so much I wasn’t hungry enough to eat lunch I’m a faddy eater as well except when I see a desert
see a NHS dietitian who can prescribe supplements via your GP , I’m on Ensure compact and Calagen. Lots of small meals is better than trying to eat a large one, my dietician told me to stay clear of any thing advertised as healthy as these are normally low calorie aimed at people trying to lose weight. The NHS diet sheet for gaining weight is a good read.
Hi osha I have a few excess kilos if you want them as I'm slightly over the guidelines for my knee op weight wise since the beginning of December 🤪. Seriously though the respiratory were discussing milky drinks, custards and rice pudding as a full fat option for weight gain when I did pulmonary rehab.
Obviously too many desserts probably aren’t generally a great idea but high good cholesterol isn’t a bad thing quite the opposite I was referred to a health trainer by my Gp as my cholesterol was slightly high but it turned out that most of the cholesterol in my body is good and counteracts the much smaller amount of bad 😃 If you haven’t already maybe get a breakdown of the different levels of cholesterol and if it’s mainly good continue with calorific desserts in moderation. I worked in a residential home for the elderly and many residents there were encouraged to eat high calorie foods - plenty desserts served with double cream etc - obviously not for anyone suffering from diabetes You really need to see a dietician - cholesterol levels over 7 are deemed too high but if like me the good is over 5 whilst the bad is just over 2 you are actually doing really well 😊
Don't really have much to add Osha, but the nurse suggested I add cheese to everything as I love it. Grate it over veg, meat, whatever. I have a small appetite too and prefer little and often, snacking on nuts and fruit between small meals. x
Looks as though Don has the right idea. My grandson is 19 years old, 6 ft tall and eats like a horse. He weighs 68 kilos, i.e. 10 stone. He also runs, cycles and can easily burn of 1,000 calories in an afternoon.
As others have suggested, a dietitican should be able to come up with meals that might tempt you which would not affect your cholesterol levels. I am overweight, cholesterol is a bit high but not too alarming. My mum when in her 90s used to eat like a little bird but did have lots of cream teas to try to keep a few pounds on. Take care, let us know how you get on, Chris.
I have always struggled to put on weight, and have been 20kg underweight for over 50 years. However, if you’re not unwell as a result of it, I wouldn’t be too worried. The only research into so-called “super slim” people (who make up 2% of the population) suggests they eat 14% less than average, but suffer no ill effects from it. They have a higher metabolism and, rather surprisingly, do less exercise (probably because their metabolism is burning up any excess calories). They can put on weight if they eat more, but it’s a bit of a struggle as they don’t feel particularly hungry. Can’t say Xmas indulgence has helped my digestion much, and I’ve probably now lost more than I gained! By all means try some of the suggestions but don’t get too hung up on it as your weight might be perfectly natural for you.
I had the same problem a few years ago and the hospital dietician prescribed Ensure, which I still take to this day, as it is very nutritious as well as helped me return to a healthier weight. Good luck finding a solution
How about your doctor prescribing Ensures? Tasty, many flavours. That might help. Take care
Hi ,Had the same problem a year or so ago. The weight was dropping off me .
I went on to have a tin of rice pudding every morning with a small Banana sliced
on the top . The rice pud was microwaved before the banana was added.
No extra milk or sugar added.
The rice pud was the cheapest in the stores at 25p a tin. Tesco's ,Morrisons, Sainsbury's all sell this item.......Same sized tins slightly different labels ....
It took several months , but it really does work
Jo. 😃
