Looking for a bit of reassurance. I have a problem with an irritated scalp . I have bought some polytar shampoo. Does anyone know if this is safe for copd /asthma sufferers?

The shampoo may well be perfectly safe to use but if in doubt speak to a pharmacist who should be able to help. Hope it works for you. Xxx❤️

Thank you for replying sassy, i appreciate it. I try to be so safe with everything i use, not just shampoo, but never use chemicals to clean my house, i make my own with vinegar , lemon and bicarb. I usually have Simple shampoo. I will ask my pharmacist about coaltar shampoo. 🙂

It’s a good idea to make your own household products and I don’t blame you for checking out the coal tar shampoo. My mum had psoriasis on her scalp and found it helped but she didn’t have lung issues. Hope the pharmacist can help Collie. Xx👍

Shampoos etc can be very individual to how you could react. However polytar should cause no problems. I personally use Tgel shampoo for the same problem which is cheaper and with less of that tar smell.

Thank you for your reply. I have used tgel and been ok. Polytar is quite expensive i know and strong smell. I actually bought some E45 shampoo for itchy scalp and it seems ok, there is no smell either which is good.

Hi, my husband has psoriasis and used TGel without any problems, but when he went to a stronger version although it cleared up the psoriasis he started to suffer from vertigo. He has to have his ears cleaned for skin and wax build up anyway.

A random conversation with my hairdresser and she said the stronger shampoo might be causing the skin in the ear problems leading to vertigo. She suggested baby shampoo (I've used baby shampoo most of my life as I get flaky itchy skin including my ears and eyelids with most others. I always use Johnsons).

He switched to the baby shampoo and the vertigo stopped within a week and at his next ear clean he was told there was no dry skin in his ears and the wax was lighter in colour. He was told to carry on with the baby shampoo as it was working.

Sorry, just offering a different, less harsh way, that may help your itchy/flakey scalp. xx

Thank you for your reply. Very reassuring. I get vertigo but i think that’s because i have spondylitis in neck and shoulder. I will try baby shampoo if the E45 doesn’t help.

I use to use it on our daughter when she was young. She also had asthma. It was used to treat the eczema on her scalp. If in doubt ask the pharmacist xx
