Do people on oxygen therapy need to use a certain type of shampoo, shower gels or deodorants. All these questions, sorry.

Hi blf1

I'm on oxygen 24/7 and the only thing I was told you shouldn't use was any lip treatment/stick that contained any petroleum products.

Oxygen is NOT (emphasis not shouting) flammeable. It just helps fuels burn brighter longer and hotter. The fuel would be the vaseline. All that is needed then is an ignition source (s flame).

So unless you are smoking on oxygen and wearing lip balm you should be quite safe.

Washing products are fine.

Hope this helps.

Hi, commenced on oxygen therapy at home today so still trying to get used to it lol!.... random question, I currently use a styling mousse on my hair.....contains all types of oil and I'm wondering if it's safe for me to continue?...any advice would be greatly appreciated..

The BLF helpline may be able to advise you entirely about this BLF13 or your 02 supplier.

Here are a few tips from Drugs.com about safety (no aerosols or anything that may be inflammable, cleaning fluids, oil based products etc.):

I have been on oxygen for over 2 years and have never changed a thing, even sit in front of a log fire and I'm still here to tell the tale.

Glad it's not just me Libby - I've been on oxygen for 5 years and I've never changed a thing either. We've got a gas fire and gas cooker, but I've never been given any warnings with regard to the oxygen and it didn't occur to me to ask. My husband's in charge of cooking these days (lucky me :-) I never did like cooking) but I have been known to grill the odd cheese toastie.

Yes my husband has given up smoking but it is the ignition of the gas cooker that worries me even if he is not wearing his oxygen in that room then?

Been on oxygen for over 7 years now and the only things I was told was to avoid products that contain petroleum and of course don't smoke while on oxygen. Other than that - no other issues. Starting on oxygen is intimidating but after awhile it is no different than any other routine.

Ask a fire safety officer to call from your local fire service, they will tell you how to use it safely and they like to know that you have oxygen in the house in case of fire etc. Also if you haven't done so ring your electricity supplier to become a priority customer in case of power cuts. Keep smiling.

Haven't changed a thing.

Just take care not to have cylinder close to heat source, or stored in direct sunlight. It's a matter of common sense.

Fortunately the lady who delivers mine is a Technician so she knows all aspects of Oxygen usage which has enabled me to decide what type of supply is most suitable.
