Copd. But do not have a cough

I have had copd now for about 6 years. But I do not have a cough.

Sometimes, about once a week I will have a sudden bad cough that lasts about a minite. But no phelgm, instead I start sneezing and have to blow my nose for quite a while

does anybody else get this and is it possible to have copd without a cough

thanks, Roger

I don't cough much - only when I have an infection. I sneeze a lot and have to blow my nose a lot also....so I am assuming we are all unique :)

I was diagnosed 8 years ago.

Was mild, now moderate.

I don't have a cough or mucus

I've only had 1 infection in the 8 years

I kn ow someone else like this and he is now severe and on oxygen

Not everyone is the same, we are all different

Hope this helps

Thanks for your replies. How important is exercise in stopping the progression of copd

Exercise and maintaining a healthy weight are very important. As twice shy says going up and down stairs as fast as you can and also walking are good exercise. These can quite easily be built in to your everyday routine.

I also think its good to do exercise that you actually enjoy as you are more likely to stick with it .

Thanks for that guys. I had a heartt attack in 2007 and it knocked the stuffing out of me. I went into and still have severe treatment resistent depression. Then a year later I was told I had moderate copd, after I started getting breathless quite easily it made me a bit scared to be honest to do much at all. It has got to the point I don't do anything. But this past week I have started going for a walk, only about 500 yards then I get breathless but I intend to keep at it and build up my stamina. I also started a diet. As I am obese. My doc got me on spiriva and ventolin. I only just started the spiriva. Are any of you on this and is it any good

thanks for listening

Roger

The Main Factor to COPD is O for Obstructive. It is the obstruction that has made the simple action of breathing out what you breath in is a problem. It does not always mean that a cough will be a factor, until there is something there to irritate or be moved.

It is very important that you take your preventers and openers when needed. Learn to control your breathing once it is looking to go a little astray.

Be Well

I don't have a cough...only if I smoke....I don't have phlegm either,...only if I smoke.......I take exercise easy,do what you like.,,you have to feel good,I like walking best,but can't as I can't breathe well,so I'm concentrating on building my muscles up.as well as relaxing.dont overdo it .take your time.its not a race,important we feel good and in control,so lots of things help,not just one thing,everything.

Hello roger1952. I'm Stage 4 and don't cough or have phlegm unless I have a bit of an infection. Exercise is the key. Use it or lose it as they say.

Yes, I have COPD and no cough or phlegm but I do have sneezing fits.

I have COPD (moderate) as well as central sleep apnea. I too have little if any coughing, unless I try to extract some phlegm, but I do have a sinus issue that when laying down (sleeping) the sinuses discharge into an already tax bronchial and lung disease. I find twice a day up to 5 times a day when I have a cold or allergies the use if a saline pump works wonders.

Aww, thanks guys for all your supportive posts. I feel much better after reading them. I thought I had been handed a death sentence after being told I have copd. I am classed as moderate I ssuppose with my spiro tests showing 66%, but my. Last test three months ago was 59% but the nurse said the machine was not accurate and they had ordered a new one. My first test i had was 88% which didnt bother me much I quit smoking but cant understand why it has gone down to 66/59% could this be down to my gaining 2 stone due to lack of excercise. I stopped being active as I got breathless very quickly. Anyone else on spiriva and is it any good.

Thank you very much for listening I really apptreciate it. To be honest I am scared stiff

Hi Roger, I fully understand this post is 3 plus years old so I hope all is as well as can be expected with you but I just wanted to say thank you for putting this post up. I also have been diagnosed with COPD and have not coughed for over 6 plus months and was getting really really worried as I cannot cough and thought something was happening out of the ordinary and I was the only one this was happening to. A big thank you from me to you.

Stay young, grow strong

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your replies.

As far as the spiriva is concerned, I started taking it on tuesday and found it was working ok. Then I woke up this morning and the left side of my neck was sore and swollen and my left eye was bloodshot. I phoned dr and was told to stop taking it and he put me on seretide instead

Brilliant start with the walking 500 yards is good . I'm sure you will gain benefit in many ways ...better breathing , more stamina and a lifting of the spirits as you reach your goals.

I was diagnosed moderate copd 6 months ago ( 55% ) and quit smoking after 48 years .......had a dreadful cough for 2 years prior .....but this has now gone since I quit the ciggies and started using Spiriva . Fortunately I am reasonably fit and the doctor has said that my fitness level is helping to compensate for my poor lung function. Iam trying very hard to maintain my fitness mainly with walking and gardening. ( of course this is much easier in the summer! ) Have put on a bit of weight but am trying hard to keep this in check.

Most people on this site give very good reports about Spiriva.

Good luck with your diet and exercise .I'm sure you will soon feel the benefits. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

i often cough and bring up phlegm, but on meeting some others with copd, many didnt have a cough, i think offcut, hit the nail with the hammer saying the O in copd stands for "obstructive", this is an obstruction that effects our airways, it need not make us all cough.

i might say, since stopping smoking, eating better, exercising better, this coughing and bringing up phlegm, has lessened very much so ,,,,jimmy

Yes!!! I don't hardly ever cough..but my nose runs alot.. especially at work

I was diagnosed with COPD 2 months ago, I rarely cough..I was feeling shortness of breath and tired doing yardwork, I attributed to the unusually hot. humid weather, visited my Dr and Pulmonalogist and got this diagnosis, but I also have severe Gerd...I am a small petite person.
