Hi Everyone,
It's my first time here and I am hoping to find someone who has been in a similar position.
I am 6 months pregnant and have discovered my baby only has one lung. I have since found out this is rare. Many of the doctors have never come across this and there is very little information online.
It is probably unlikely but I am hoping to hear some stories from parents in a similar position or anyone born with one lung so we can prepare for birth and early life with a new baby.

I hope you can find someone with experience from yours and your baby’s situation.
In the meantime I just want to say that I was born with a congenital lung defect on my right lung and had the middle lobe removed when I was 6 weeks old. That was 62 years ago and I have had a completely ”normal” and full life since. I am fit and have always been able to do anything my friends did in terms of fitness (though I am pretty useless at ball sports!!)
I have asthma and bronchiectasis too and have had pneumonia several times through the years but so far always managed to bounce back.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your forthcoming parentage. I don't know anyone who was born with one lung, but my sister in law had one lung removed when still a young woman- she had TB. She lived a normal active life and is now 90. The human body has a lot of spare capacity, so I hope your baby will have a happy active life too. Best wishes.

Hello and welcome 😊 I can't help I'm afraid, I just wanted to wish you well with your birth. Along with your excitement you must now be anxious about what lies ahead. I hope you have felt reassured by some of the replies so far, especially Rattle's. Children are extremely resilient and I'm sure your baby will adapt very well.

Soon after I was born, the doctors found out that 1 of my lungs had collapsed. I was sent to the chest clinic, which then was the London Whitechapel Hospital, and operated on.
I'm pleased to say that I'm still here 65 years later. The advice given to my parents/me was to take things easy and rest when needed, and that swimming would be good exercise.
It's amazing what the doctors were able to do back then, and knowing how science and technology have improved throughout the years, I'd like to think that the doctors would be able to do something for your child when it arrives.
