This is my first post on this group. I was diagnosed in November with an Atrial Septal Defect (hole in my heart) which needs to be closed. I’m 41. On of my symptoms had been coughing up blood, so the heart consultant who will carry out my asd closure surgery, referred me to a pulmonologist for tests. A few weeks ago I had a bronchoscopy, and my results have been up loaded to my hospital my chart, but the consultant is away at the moment and seeing me a week tomorrow. On Friday I have a lung function test at the hospital. My BAL results say Accute Inflammation in both lungs, and Chronic inflammation in one lung.
My question is what could be the cause of this and how do you think they will treat it? My heart surgeon is waiting for the “all clear” from the pulmonologist before she will operate but I am now worried that this lung issues might make things more complicated. Any advice or your experiences would be really appreciated.
Other results they’ve uploaded but not discussed with me yet are Low white blood count, low neutrophils, and high Creatine Kinase.
Thanks for reading.
Best wishes, Emma

Hi, Emma. Sorry I can't help you with your questions, but just want to wish you well. Are you managing to eat a healthy balanced diet with all this going on? All the best, M.
I think I may currently have subacute inflammation in my lungs. It's under investigation by a pulmonologist. Would you mind if I ask what the symptoms were that you experienced in regards to your lung inflammation?
If you'd rather not discuss this publicly, feel free to send me a direct message.
Hi, this was only picked up due to the Atrial Septal Defect in my heart, I mentioned to the consultant I have had some episodes of coughing up blood over the last 8 months or so. I hope you get some answers soon, I see my pulmonologist on Thursday.
Hi Emma 😊 'fraid I can't help either, just thought I'd say hello and wish you all the best with your op. Hopefully the lung issues won't delay things 🤞 All the best Laurie xx
from personal experience with coughing blood, I was advised by my consultant that pink tinged sputum is very common and can occur with any chest infection, heavy coughing etc. Fresh blood is not so common and my instructions are less than an egg cup full call 111, more than an egg cup full call 999. I would guess that you have had X-rays, CT scan prior to the broncoscopy and these would show anything nasty. If it is an infection I expect it would be treated by antibiotics/antivirals either by tablet or in some cases IV if the tablet dose is not enough.
Thank you, mine is bright red and only blood but not more than an egg cup at a time so far. I’m seeing my pulmonologist on Thursday so will report back then with what I’m told, hopefully nothing serious and I can get a date in for this heart surgery.
