First of all when using another artists work, one has to credit or used the word "inspired" followed by the artists name.
Van Gogh died 24th July 1880, so his work would be in the Public Domain and therefor not subject to copyright, even so when not copying a complete painting. then "Inspired By" is usual and a good idea.
The first painting is Van Gogh's Roses - They are white and being Van Gogh was a Post Impressionist they would come across with an abstract feel.
I paint in an impressionist style but not Post impressionist. I have tried to keep faith to how it looked, but I added some pink to the roses. the painting I have done is abstract but different than the original - Not everyone likes that style.
Second Painting is inspired by Van Gogh - Starry Night.
I am using 8 inch x 8 inch canvases so this was quite a challenge. I could have used a larger canvas, but wanted both paintings.
Yes it was a challenge -Some leave out the conifer, I did not but half size which also being a small canvas means building not correctly to scale. I took that licence and did it anyway.

I used to run an art club when I was teacher - all the children from year 3-6 chose a club from a list and did half a term in each. Mine was more art appreciation. I’d choose an artist, Van Gogh, Monet, Lowry, Matisse and George Seurat were 4 that I can remember. I’d make PowerPoint of their life and some of their work and the children would draw, paint or crayon a work in the style of. I’d try to find music to go along with the artist. Van Gogh and Lowry.
That Helen is how children should be taught . I near did a Monet , but wanted to do the roses - I would not attempt this type of painting on 8 inch canvas again. Back to what you said, art lessons for children should be fun.
I love both paintings but especially the starry sky one. The stars seem to be dancing and i really like the buildings in the foreground too. I didn’t realise that Van Gogh died as recently as 1980. How did I not know this?! I’ve learned something new today. Thank you.
Well that’s ok, I was all ready to believe that he’d died more recently. I’m glad you gave your paintings a go even at that size , that’s a lot of detail on a small canvas. They’re really great

I like them both Ern- can't decide which one I like best. I don't normally go for flower paintings, except the Dutch ones with snails and other creepy crawlies hidden among the foliage, but your roses really have a certain something. As for the starry night, it made me think of the Perry Como song 'Take a wheel' with the silver moon going round and round in tune. (Sorry.) But there is real energy and movement in those stars. Why are the houses and church black? Hope it isn't a sign you've gone off the human race.🙂🙂🙂 xxx

The colour of the roses in your art Ern007 are the same as my camellia flowers in the garden. When I got married I had pink roses and the men had pink rose buttonholes. Lovely painting and thank you for the details behind your inspiration. Its a lovely sunny day today so hope it inspires you to more painting . Relax and enjoy your day .

Saw the original "Starry Night" in the beautiful Musee du Jeu de Paume in Paris. It is inspirational. Regrettably they've turned the museum into a film and media study now. A sign of the times unfortunately, but VVG's works have been moved into the less atmospheric Musee D'Orsay, a converted railway station.
Jeu de Paume was a beautiful quite small building which you could get round in a couple of hours and was much less intimidating than the Louvre which was invariably stuffed full to the rafters. It was dedicated to Impressionism and Post Impressionism and featured some brilliant artists, like Gaugain, a friend of Van Gogh, Rousseau- le douanier, Degas, and many other great painters. Actually Ern, the Muses D'Orsay is on the left bank of the Seine, close to the Sorbonne. Many happy hours spent there, such a beautiful city.
It may well be to the south Ern, but to know which bank of a river you are on, you imagine yourself stood in the middle of the river facing the sea,(direction of the flow), and the left bank is on your left side. It could equally be N,S,E or W.

Ern Van Gogh.👨🎨 Amazing paintings. I think Vincent would have approved of your likeness towards hes paintings. Ern you have captured so much detail on a small canvas. Well done. I like them both but starry night is my favourite. Sad story though of where Van Gogh painted starry night. Thank you for sharing your lovely paintings🎨🖼️
Thank you Issy22 -Yes very sad - He was vert depressed at times but this was very low. No matter what, as a painter I have a high regard for him, he was a true genius.

He was a genius he painted some fantastic paintings. I have seen some in the museums. It’s sad how he was so depressed but it didn’t affect he’s art work they were still very good.
He carried on regardless and I think he was right to do so - You summed his mood well Issy. He was reliant to a large extent for supplies from brother Theo van Gogh, Who was an art dealer and unwell himself. You are right it did not affect his art work adversely .
Lovely pictures, I'm sure Vincent would have approved! 'Vincent & Theo' is one of my favourite films, Tim Roth does a great job of portraying the complexities of Vincent and his equally complex relationship with his brother Theo. My favourite format as an artist is 20cm square, which is more or less 8" square, and I think it's a good 'intimate' sort of size for this pair of paintings xxx
Thank you HelNel7 - I remember about 30 years ago .. At the time the BBC was running a programme for school Van Gough - It featured his relationships with Thao and Gaugain - It showed the need of Vincent to have cash from his brother to buy his art supplies. I remember in that series he wept when thinking Gaugain had unfriended him.I like the small 8x8, for the type of painting I do at moment, very versatile I would use larger if painting starry night alone. I also like a 12x12" canvas, tape all 4 side and get a white border.
I think Van Gogh and Gauguin were too different for the friendship between them to have been anything other than difficult. Obviously to us, now, Van Gogh needed the kind of help and support with his mental health that simply wasn't available to people in those days. It's tragic that he died at the age of 37, but I hope it would be some comfort to him to know how much his work is admired, and how it continues to inspire artists such as yourself xxx
