Review of medication at GP.

Just seen on my GP notes on line my medication review. I have not seen this gp or any other for this review.i am on 4 sheets of prescription pad.is this normal? I would have thought with 3 previous heart attacks ,14 stents, bronchitis, constant pain in legs and feet, diabetes

I would have been consulted ?

personally I would have expected to be consulted (but not necessarily by a gp) about any review. I have a yearly review with practice pharmacist, although I have to say it is normally a quick phone call out of the blue so rarely get chance to query anything. I do have however face to face reviews about COPD/asthma and diabetes so if I have any queries about medication I would ask then.

If you’re not happy or unsure make an appointment at your practice but if there is a pharmacy attached you are more likely to be asked to have an appointment with pharmacist than a gp. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing because pharmacists have far more knowledge of medications than a gp has.

Hi jhorsf. There are two kinds of review at my surgery. One is a “paper” one done by the in house pharmacist- they look at your meds, conditions and test results and then authorise your prescription for another year.

In the other, we have an appointment for blood tests which are then reviewed by the GP. If there is something wrong we are contacted by the GP.

Of course, for me there is my asthma and copd review. (Usually a telephone appointment of late.)

It is the information collected at these reviews that the pharmacist uses to authorise your meds. (Does that make sense?)

Having said all of that, with your conditions you should have annual blood tests and an appointment with the heart and lung nurse to check your respiratory condition, and some surgeries have a diabetes nurse. If these don’t happen, give your surgery a ring to get them organised.

I phone the surgery and that's it ,meds renewed, never seen any one to discuss my meds.

I think they have been doing this for a while. I have noticed on my prescriptions when I bother to look (I mean who looks at their prescription when it is 3 pages long) the pharmacist tends to do it but because I disagreed with him I have been asked to speak with the gp this time. I think its should be with your own gp as they tend to know you better but think they must be too busy for this now. I am sure if you dont feel happy you could request the review with your own gp x

our surgery does this! It just means the surgery or community pharmacist has checked what you are prescribed- if there was any cross indications they or a gp would then contact you! We had this and expected a call but nope!

My 4 pages of repeats just get renewed automaticallyDon't have any heart probs.

But do have severe lung difficulties...

I'm considered an expert patient and tell the gp (by letter) just what I'm up too.

Perhaps you are being considered the same?

If you want to see your Doctor perhaps make an appointment but I wouldn't wait 4 weeks for an appointment, reassurance can go a long way...
