Temporary Asthma

Hi Everyone. I contracted a virus 21 days ago. Fever, flu and a bad cough that turned into pressure in my left lung and I started feeling short of breath. The pulmonologist called it airway hyperactivity and its temporary because the air is extremely polluted in my city and he prescribed symbicort powder inhaler capsules. I went for second opinion to my GP and he called it asthma and he says its a temporary phase and prescribed two inhalers for 6 days. Is there anything called temporary asthma post virus? Is there any similar experiences?

Hi iqibee. I have not heard of temporary asthma just “normal” asthma. However I have heard of people taking inhaled steroids after infection (especially covid) where there inflammation in tithe airways.

One of the features of asthma is inflammation of the airways - this is why people with asthma use steroid inhalers - to reduce or prevent the inflammation.. It sounds like your GP thinks your airways are inflamed due to high levels of pollution hence the inhaler.

Just see how it goes for now and ask your GP when you next see him about the temporary diagnosis. I suppose at the end of the day time will tell if it is temporary or permanent. In the meantime I wouldn’t be too concerned as long as the treatment is working.

I just keep clearing my left lung where the inflammation is. Feels like mucus is trapped there but I cannot expel it. My breathing is better but foster is just not letting me sleep. I wake up every 10 minutes with racing heart and adrenaline rush.

Hi Iqibee. Have you reported these side effects to your GP? There are lots of different inhalers that all do the same job that may not affect you in this way. Worth discussing I think.

Sounds like Yr Airways have been irritated/inflamed by the infection. I hope the inhalers work for you x
