Does anyone here continue to have blood in their phlegm after recovering from pneumonia?

I finished taking my medication a week ago, and I haven't been getting much phlegm these days.

But now I see blood spots in the phlegm, I have an x-ray tomorrow.I am very worried, my mind sometimes drifts to dark thoughts.

Great that you are having an X-ray but I would be surprised if this is anything serious. The pneumonia will have weakened the blood vessels in your throat through coughing. As such when you cough they simply break again. Blood spots in phlegm are rarely indication of anything serious. More serious is throwing or coughing up larger amounts of blood.

Hope all goes well with X-ray tomorrow and it’s actually great that your gp is so on the ball and double checking.

I didn't have a cough, just a runny nose and twice blood in the phlegm. Initial x-ray showed Peribronchial bronchial changes in rll - can match pneumonia. After taking my medication, the runny nose disappeared, the phlegm began to disappear, but now I see small spots of blood in the phlegm. This is the first time this has happened to me, that's why I don't know how to start recovering from pneumonia, I hope it's just pneumonia.

I have been admitted on 4 occasions with pneumonia. During a predischarge meeting, I showed the doctor a tissue with blood droplets. The reply was that it was probably injury to surrounding tissue and I should see my GP if it continued. It ceased a week or so after discharge.

I am so pleased to hear you are having an x-ray which hopefully will be illuminating. Wishing you a healthy 2024 Vinaa. xx💗

Blood spots in phlegm is very common, especially if blowing the nose, if it’s coughed up again it’s common and can be caused by any chest infection or simply heavy coughing. It’s coughing fresh blood that is a lot more serious, I have practical experience of both, and try not to worry about the x-ray

Thanks for this, thinking about your words gives me some reassurance.

I had pneumonia in 2019 but never coughed up blood. If you are doing that I Highley suggest get an urgent appointment to see either your gp or see a nurse practioner and get checked out to be on the safe side you might have just burst a capillary with coughing but still get checked out.
