Can anyone advise the best blood pressure medication that doesn't make breathlessness and dry cough worse. Also doesn't make your ankles swell.Really appreciate any recommendations as I am not sure the gp has the time to go into the different types. Have tried ramipri and amlodipine. Thank you

Hi, I believe there are several BP meds, it seems that it's a case of trying different ones until you find the right one. How long you have to try them for I'm afraid I don't know, perhaps the leaflet mentions it. This is only a guess, I'm wondering if cost plays a part. I'm sort of in the same boat having been px Amlodipine recently. My skinny annkles are slightly swollen by the end of the day, I take it at bedtime. I'm going to check out the NHS website, it's usually very informative on ailments, their symptoms and treatments

Hello; we can't really advise on medicines on this forum and we certainly can't foretell which side effects any individual will suffer. I am on Bisoprolol and Candesartan, neither of which has given me side effects, but I think that is the luck of the draw. Only your GP can say whether any other meds might suit you better. Good luck.

Hello TeraLea,

Oh yes BP meds can increase the cough can’t they.

Have you chatted this through with your surgery pharmacist ? I find them very helpful when it comes to sorting out medication. It is their specialty after all. Ask your GP to refer you perhaps.

Hope your cough resolves soon.

Go well.

We all react differently to medications , it seems to take time with trial and error to find the right one, but Amolopine is well known for causing swollen ankles. I tried so many different ones before finally settling on Bisporalol. I would go back to your gp and keep trying until you find the right one . Good luck x

Hi Teralea I take lisinopril 75mg twice a day for BP I have been on it a long time. I was prescribed amlodopine 2 yrs ago alongside lisinopril but had to stop because of swollen legs and ankles. Stay well🤗

Hi, I was on atenolol for years because of one stupid doctor as it has the opposite affect of ventolin. Finally put on losartan potassium 25mg and does the trick as no side effects. 👍

Hi Teralea, when I was first put on Blood Pressure pills, it took two or three changes before I found one that suited me, personally, and that was Ramapril, I had taken until recently when I developed viral coughs which were persistent.

My Chest consultant said that Ramapril has been thought to be negative in respect to coughing fits, and I was taken off it, and put on Candersatin.

Hope this helps, and I wish you all the best.

High blood pressure like a lot of ills can be improved and sometimes completely resolved by making life style changes. Exercise and diet. specifically for High BP something called the DASH diet.

I could only tolerate one, Indapamide. The best blood pressure reduction measure I took was to lose weight, even though I had a healthy weight for my height, it was at the top end of the range. So I lost a stone, still had a healthy weight but it was lower middle of the range.

I have taken clonidine for years, with no side effects, it is an old fashion drug. When AF came along they put me on Diltiazem also which cause both ankles/feet to swell. After a week on Lasix swelling went down. Tho the other side effects of Dilt continue, wish it had only been the swelling. I seem to have most of the side effects from the BP and BB meds.

Good question Teralea, after 35 years on blood pressure medication I’m for ever changing the pills because of bad side effects. Sorry but it’s just a case of seeing your Doctor and asking for something different until you find something that suits you. Good luck, what suits one person doesn’t suit another. Xx
