Blood pressure medication.

I know that a lot of people will probably have high blood pressure due to copd or the meds. We have to take. I was given amlodipine. It worked to bring pressure down. But after a few months. I ended up with sore stomach, nausea and no appetite. It is getting worse to the point I couldn't cope yesterday. It was worse than my severe copd. And that's saying something. I didn't take it last night and feel a little better. I know it will be a while before it's all out of my system. I would like to know what other people are taking. As I know I will need a replacement. Please help if you can. PS. Gaviscon and medium didn't help at all.

Hi Tilantoe, I can’t put you on the trail of different tabs, other than to say, I was taking ‘Amlodipine’. I had to go for an ‘Angiogram’ as I was getting very swollen ankles and feet! ( the Angiogram, because I have had heart probs in the past, and it was thought the swelling was something to do with that). But as soon as I had given the doc my list of medication, he said, “ I think we might have the answer right here!” He said that Amlodipine can and does cause a lot of ‘side effects’! Including, ‘tummy upsets and feet swellingI’ still had the Angiogram (just in case). But it was fine. I stopped taking Amlodipine straight away and have not had swollen ankles or feet since!! I think you must know (after all that!!🙄). That you should stop taking and ask you doc to try you something else. Hope you will be feeling a lot better very soon!!

Thanks cassa37. I know we are all different and need different meds. And if the effects were immediate I would of known. But they crept up and got worse. Will tell doc. I am not taking them again

Hope you get sorted very soon🙂

I get very sŵollen ankles feet and legs. I've been worrying thinking it was heart failure which I was diagnosed with after a heart attack 3 years ago. I've been taking Amlodipine for at least 2 years maybe longer and thought I had no side effects.........hmmmm now I'm wondering. Oh it's all so confusing. I take meds for type 2 diabetes. Severe emphysema, angina high BP and no idea what does what to where lol. 😉. I hope both Tilantoe and Cassa get sorted.😀😀

Thankyou. Hope they can help you too! It might be worth having a word with the doc. We know all drugs have side effects. But. It is what we can tolerate and live with. And I can't live with this nausea and pain.

in reply toTilantoe

I absolutely loathe feeling or being sick. I can't bear it. At the slightest twinge of nausea I'm reaching for meds to stop it. You've been going through hell for months you poor soul. Awful! I do hope your system settles down very soon and that's an end to the nausea. All the best. 💐

Swollen hands & feet is a common side effect with amlodipine - I only know two people who've taken it and both had to come off it to another drug because of it.

There are dozens of effective BP drugs - ask your GP to change it. It may not be the amlodipine but very likely in my opinion.

in reply tosoulsaver

Thankyou soul saver I will take your advice. Amlodipine was an add on to the Losartan I also take for BP as it wasn't working well. I'll ask GP if I can drop it or change it. I've been doubling up on Furosimide ( diuretic ) thinking the swelling was symptom of heart failure. I told doc was I was doing but he wasn't bothered. I'm so glad I joined this site!! Thanks again. 💐

Hi Anastasia, yes, I think this is a problem with lots of people who are taking meds for many different reasons! Like you, I was thinking it was ‘heart failure’ after a heart attack! My Amlodipine was a ‘back up’ for Enalapril. But am also taking other drugs for breathing probs and a ‘lobectomy’ (because of cancer). So you do eventually get confused as to what is a ‘side effect’ to what!! Anyway at least I have solved the Amlodipine one! Hope you too can get yours ‘solved!’

in reply toCassa37

I hope I do too. Thanks for your help . You've obviously had more than your fair share of 'troubles ' . I wish you all the best and hope everything settles down for you.

Thanks red Sox for your prompt reply. I take all meds with food as I learnt that lesson many years ago. I took it at suppertime as it made me sleepy too. The nausea lasts all day. It only eases a little in the evening for a couple of hours. Before I take it again. And the symptoms are not immediate. But thanks anyway. Glad they work for you.

Hi Tilantoe,i am one of the lucky ones ,i take amlodipine i think it' s 5mg first thing in the morning along with my omeprazole 20mg and a statin tablet, all without or before food.i also have a small hiatus hernia and i am treated for silent reflux, hence the omeprazole and i have never experienced any side effects and certainly no gastric problems.i hope you can get to the bottom of this and maybe another calcium type blocker can replace the amlodipine?good luck.

Hello there, I had this drug prescribed and had several side effects like you describe. I would ask to try others, I took a blood pressure tablet for years without problem but then there was a scare so they changed it to the one you mention. I no longer take tablets for BP as they raise my uric acid levels but I have tried several with side effects ensuing . My blood pressure is quite stable and borderline without drugs. You do need to take it up with your Gp as it can be a problem when you have other illnesses being treated at the same time. Good Luck

Thankyou. If I could do something so I wouldn't have to take them I would. Weight is not an issue. But I know because of the severe emphysema I am not as active as I was. I try my best. But you can only push yourself so far! My bp is quite high though. 161/ 96. Which is a worry to me. I will have to have a word with the doc.

You are right your blood pressure is above normal but not massively high.Maybe the British heart foundation might have some useful tips. I know alcohol can raise it & some foods, so simple diet changes can help, even slow regular walking helps if you can't do too much exercise. Maybe another drug will do the trick , fingers crossed

Thanks so much. Never thought of British heart foundation. I will see what they recommend to be drug free. PS. I don't think I can be classed as a drinker. I had a brandy coffee last Christmas lol.

I haven't taken that for high blood pressure, but I have taken a lot of other blood pressure meds and have had adverse reactions to all except Indapamide. On my GP's advice I lost about 12 lb to treat my resistant raised bp, moving from a healthy bmi of 24.3 to a healthy bmi of 22.8 and no longer need to take an additional blood pressure med besides the Indapamide.

Tilantoe in reply toErgendl

Thankyou for your reply. Weight is not an issue. In fact if I lost much more I would disappear. LOL. I always had very low blood pressure. So I can only put it down to the meds for copd.

My husband has no effects like yours poor you. Like others I suggest you try another type there are so many out there. See your doctor or different one! My husband doesn't do much exercise and needs to, but not got energy. He has lost more weight so needs to keep stronger muscle mass.

He also takes, omeprazole 20mg. for reflux as lungs are over expanded like most with COPD. Wishing you better luck with tablets .

Hi. Thanks for your reply. 40mg of nexium and gaviscon had no effect at all..So will have to see my go.

amlodipine caused my ankles and feet to swell and the GP changed it to Larcanidipine which has given me no trouble but I am also on Ramipril and Doxasocin along with several other meds for various things. Try something else or as redsox suggests take toast and honey before hand.

Re Amlodopine -- seems to be very bad on side effects. It gave me serious, almost constant, tingling effects in hands which are still not quite gone after stopping the medicine for nearly a month. It clearly has a very worrying power over the neural pathways.

Tilantoe in reply toaudrey2543

Thankyou. I have that in my hands too.

Have you found something more acceptable?

audrey2543 profile image

Not yet because GP said to go without Amlodopine for a month to clear its effects before any other action. It seems reactions to all these meds are very individualistic. Trial and error under GP advice seems to be the only way.

Thankyou. I haven't spoke to my doc yet. I wanted to make sure it was definitely that first. But my stomach at least is slowly improving.

I was on Til Diem for hypertension for several years with no ill effects but I understand it's not suitable for everyone. Official name for the tingling is peripheral neuropathy - can also affect feet!

I have similar and take Peptac which is much cheaper than Gaviscon, I buy it over the counter at the pharmacy. Ask your doctor about Omeprazole, 1 in morning and 1 at bedtime. Hope that helps.
