Colomycin

Hello everyone. Is there anyone else on here that is taking Colomycin via a nebuliser? I have had it often but not for the last 6 months. I restarted it on Thursday 19th October and since have been suffering badly with asthma, congestion and crackling, particularly at night when I lay down. I've recently finished a month of oral antibiotics for Klebsiella and according to my last test this has now gone but belt and braces my consultant has put me back on Colomycin for 45 days and possibly longer. Any replies would be very much appreciated.

Sorry to hear it, I've not had to nebuliser anything (yet) but really I think you must speak to your prescriber as soon as possible. I'm not a doctor but it sounds like infection to me so I can well understand the belt & braces . Perhaps the colomycin loosening what's there or another another bug. Call doc ASAP to sort you out - please

Thank you peege, I had a negative test result on Friday. I think maybe you're right the Colomycin is loosening what's there. I have had Colomycin numerous times before and not had this effect. I'll speak to my respiratory nurse tomorrow, she has direct contact with the consultant who prescribed it. Maybe another test is needed.

I was prescribed it about 2 years ago but after 2 days I had bronchospasms and had to stop it.

I have had it numerous times before and not had this side effect. I'll speak to my respiratory nurse tomorrow and ask her advice.

I’ve nebulised colomycin for about 6 years. I did have bronchospasm so I have salbutamol at the same time. If you haven’t had these side effects before maybe a good idea to speak to your doctor.

Thank you Mooka, maybe I should try salbutamol as well. Do you take it before or after the nebuliser?

I take it before. I also have budesnide once a day as I have high nitrate oxcide levels. I’m immunocompromised so my doc won’t let me stop. I also had the dreaded pseudomonas. Good luck I hope you can find a way around this.

Thank you. I too have had pseudomonas, my last infection was Klebsiella, a month of oral antibiotics and now Colomycin to make sure - hopefully! Keep safe.

Goodness 4 years is a long time. I've been on and off it for about 10 years, my consultant likes to give me a break when possible. I have just had a break for 6 months. I take Montelukast as well, I take it in the morning. Hopefully things will settle down in a few days, I've not had this problem with it before. Thank you for your reply.

Hi PAP48

My daughter has suffered with Bronchiectasis over the last few years due to the side effect of her immunosuppressant drug for her kidney transplant.

We weren’t too sure what your question was but I will attach her reply.

This is obviously from her own experience as she has no medical training.

Good luck & hope you get better soon.

Thank you rossiedavid and please, please thank your daughter for me. I have had bronchiectasis all my life but officially diagnosed in 1987. I have had pseudomonas numerous times and prescribed colomycin. I have recently had a Klebsiella infection, which I believe is similar to pseudomonas. I think my consultant is just making sure after the klebsiella, I don't have pseudomonas. This time the colomycin has caused me to be quite breathless, congested and 'crackly'! I think things are settling down, I have only been taking the colomycin for 4 days this time so I'll give it a few more days and if things haven't settled completely I will contact my consultant via my respiratory nurse. Many thanks for letting me have your daughters reply and I hope she is well after her kidney transplant.

I was on Colomycin for a couple of years then the same happened to me, my lungs decided they didn't like it any more, I was also getting breathless when I nebulised .. you are not alone .. I contacted my hospital consultants and they changed my medication .. your body is rejecting it and needs new medication .. Good luck

Thank you poppyshola, how interesting to hear what has happened to you. I have had Colomycin on and off for over 10 years so to hear your lungs have decided they don't like it any more makes complete sense. May I ask what medication your consultants gave you instead of Colomycin? Prior to me having it my only option was IV, at that time, in hospital and I really don't want to go down that road again. I have only been on Colomycin this time for 4 days so I'm hoping things will settle down, I have a 45 day course for starters! Keep safe.
